3880.0. "dtss: only backup couriers ?" by UTOPIE::BRAUN_R () Thu Feb 20 1997 13:14

(cross-posted in DECNET-OSI_FOR_VMS and DTSS)

Hi all,

my customer has the following question and my poor DTS knowledge is not
sufficient:

DNOSI 6.1 with some ECO.

Several DNS-servers on the same LAN, one of them has a hardware clock
and is in the DTSS_GlobalTimeServers-directory.

Everything is working o.k (correct time), but there are two strange
outputs from "ncl sho dts all" (on all systems):

     - Last synch is 17-NOV-1858 00:00

     - All servers are acting as backup couriers, according to my
poor DTS knowledge, there should be exactly one acting as
courier (and only this server should ask the servers in the
        DTSS_GlobalTimeServers directly)

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ralph

You should urge this Customer to use the current supported version!

If there are no WAN-connected Servers/Clerks, you don't need Global
Servers (unless they have hardwired the Courier Role characteristic..)

For each DECdts Server node, please post the output from
    NCL> SHOW DTSS ALL ATTRIBUTES
NCL> SHOW DTSS LOCAL SERVER * ALL ATTRIBUTES

Hi,

thanks for reply!

Customer is unavailable this week, but from last call, he said: there
is no active courier (all servers acting as backup couriers)

Of course, you're right: in this case, no global servers are required
and the customer should remove them from the time-servers directory.
The lack of an active courier seems to be a direct result of this
(and probably the strange "Last synch" (1858, 0:00..) too)

I'll force the customer to clean up the situation and then we will see.
OSI-version 6.1: customer is unable to upgrade due to applications
reasons.

Thanks,

What version of VMS is this customer running ? Depending on the
version they should be able to upgrade to DECnet/OSi version 6.3
eco 6 bringing them up to a much cleaner DTSS version.
