3873.0. "Disable %IPC-E-BCKTRNSFAIL messages?" by VIVIAN::D_BONO () Fri Feb 14 1997 12:10

    Hi,

    Is it possible to disable the following backlink OPCOM messages
    generated from DECnet.

    Auditable event:          Network login failure
    Event time:               31-MAR-1994 09:23:26.45
    PID:                      2020015C
    Process name:             MAIL_14020022
    Username:                 DNA$SessCtrl
    Process owner:            [0,403]
    Image name:               DUA0:[SYS0.SYSCOMMON.][SYSEXE]LOGINOUT.EXE
    Status: %IPC-E-BCKTRNSFAIL, failure on the back translate address request

    Thanks,

    Dave Bono.

3873.1DECnet events/Audit Server ?VIVIAN::D_BONOTue Feb 25 1997 10:5519

    These messages are being logged by AUDIT server and LOGINOUT is logging
    the error. Hence we could disable logfails on the Audit server.
    $ SET AUDIT/AUDIT/ALARM/DISABLE=(LOGFAIL=REMOTE) however we will not
    see any genuine logfails.

    I have looked into NCL> commands like
    NCL> block event dispatcher outbound stream local_stream global filter
    ................ but the messages appear not to be DECnet events?

    Any ideas on how to stop these messages logged to OPCOM.

    Also is there anyway to stop the message on the screen when a user logs
    in "failure on the back translate address request" other than
    registering the names in DNS or LOCAL.

    Thanks,

    Dave Bono.
3873.2Not an answer, but...DRAGNS::SAUNDERSTue Feb 25 1997 12:395
Just out of curiosity, why not register the nodes in DNS? If they're going to be
accessing your system, I'd think you'd want to know who they are...

3873.3My question was on customers behalf.VIVIAN::D_BONOWed Feb 26 1997 07:2313

    I have asked this question on behalf of a customer who wants to do
    this. I beleive it was a quicker solution for him to just disable the
    messages. The customer is producing a system that will be rolled out
    around the world running a very specific internal application. I guess
    to register all the nodes locally worldwide maybe difficult.

    However if this cannot be done I have advised him to put his nodes in
    DNS.

    Thanks,

3873.4Turn off backtranslation ?BULEAN::OLSONWed Feb 26 1997 15:548

      You could possibly set the logical to turn off backtranslations..
    don't know for sure if that would remove these or if there is some
    reason that you might not want to turn off back translation.
