3864.0. "What to put for Proxy?" by COOKIE::HEISLER (Chris Heisler, ABS Engineering) Mon Feb 10 1997 17:17

    Hi,

I am really new to DECnet OSI, so my terminology may not be
very good, but I have a question that I need answered.

We have a product, Archive/Backup System, which can run on
a client or a server. If you run on a client, then the
server has to have access to the client's disks. We have
been setting up a proxy (a specific node, and a cluster
alias if we find one) for the server. This is done at
    install time.

With Phase V, the information that I get back when I
lookup the alias's for the server is the full name
(for example DEC:.cxo.aim3). But if I put that as the nodename
in the proxy, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

We may be accessing a Phase IV system from a Phase V, or
    a Phase V from a Phase V.

Is it better for me to create the proxy with the full name
(DEC:.cxo.aim3) or with only the last part (aim3). Is there
any guarantee that is I only put aim3, that it would work
in all the cases? Is there any other information that I
can get from NCL that would help me determine which one to
    use?

This is all being doing from a VMSinstal procedure, so the
logic has to be something that can be done from DCL.

    Thanks for the help,

    Chris Heisler

    Chris,

I believe if you use the 'synonym' instaed of the
'fullname', authorize will got ahead and figure out what the
fullname was anyway. Try adding a proxy for COOKIE::HEISLER and
then show proxy *. Depending on how reachable the name space is
one might get inconsistant results. I would therefore think the
fullname would be the better ansywer.

I know when I set up a proxy I sometimes set it up for
the decdns name, local and domain. (ncl sho ses con nam sea pat
will list which of these you use.)
