355.8How to change your NODENAME ?HANDVC::QAFri Jan 31 1997 03:1550

I would like to change my nodename to some other name, I saw the note attached
at the end but I'm afraid the information therein is no longer up-to-date as
perhaps the file DECNET_LOC_NODE_DEFINITIONS.TXT, DECNET_LOC_REGISTER
and NET$CONFIGURE could have been renamed to some other names or the
procedure to change the node name has been revised altogether.

In my system, I find these files instead :

SYS$SYSDEVICE:[VMS$COMMON.SYSMGR]

NETCONFIG.COM;1

SYS$SYSDEVICE:[VMS$COMMON.SYSUPD]

NETCONFIG_UPDATE.COM;1

SYS$SYSDEVICE:[VMS$COMMON.SYSMGR]

AGEN$NEW_NODE_DEFAULTS.TEMPLATE;1

Please advise how to change the nodename on a V6.0 system.

    A more complete answer...

To change the name of your node when running in the LOCAL namespace,
you will have to edit DECNET_LOC_NODE_DEFINITIONS.TXT and run
DECNET_LOC_REGISTER to load the changes into the namespace. You then
need to run NET$CONFIGURE to rename the node to the new name (option
2). This will set SYS$NODE correctly. No reboot is necessary.

If you were running in a distributed namespace, the namespace is
updated automatically (if access is allowed) when you rename your node
    through NET$CONFIGURE.

355.9Answer is half outdated; half not.ipng::CARSONPete Carson, Networks for OpenVMS EngineeringFri Jan 31 1997 09:526
I was just going to say if it's a reply from DECNET::SHURST
it's most likely out of date, yet it's not.

NET$CONFIUGRE option 2. Is correct. The text file stuff is
not though. Use SYS$SYSTEM:DECNET_REGISTER to modify
	your local data base.

I have 2 questions that I would like to get clarification.

    1) when you refer to NET$CONFIGURE option 2, are you refering to
sys$manager:NETCONFIG.COM ? if not, I cannot find anything
with the exact match of the file name ?

    2) I cannot find this file SYS$SYSTEM:DECNET_REGISTER.com on my
system, do I need to install anything in addition ?

My system is running well with DECnet before, I just need to change
the node id and assign a new nodename to it.

SYS$MANAGER:NET$CONFIGURE.COM is the configuration procedure for Phase V.
(NETCONFIG.COM is the configuration procedure for Phase IV).

It's an EXE not a COM (SYS$SYSTEM:DECNET_REGISTER.EXE).
