739.0. "Is it possible to do parallel backup?" by TLAV02::16.158.208.51::SOMNUK () Wed Jun 04 1997 06:17

Dear All,

I have some questions to ask, let say we the
database to backup and we have only 1 database
file (data.dbf).

1. Does multiple tape drives help in doing parallel
backup since it is only a file? Does parallel backup
of NSR is similar to striping in RAID?
2. Can NSR do parallel backup if we have only one directory
but multiple files in that directory? ie., Does multiple files
   get backup to multiple devices?
3. Does NSR support backup of raw device? ie., no database
module add on or any database backup utility, just
   NSR.
4. Can we ask NSR perform a shell script before we do a backup?

Thank You

Regards,
Somnuk

	1. ...multiple tape drives...

No a single save set will go to a single tape. It is more
efficent to keep your logical volumes smaller and ask the
database to split the tables between more logical disks. This
also reduces the amount of data risked by a single hardware
	failure.

	2. ...multiple files...

Only if you start seperate saves for each file

	3. ... raw device...

Yes, fully supported with 4.3 for DIGITAL UNIX

	4. ... shell script...

Yes before/after each save, not before/after each group

Re question 4. Where do we put the script? I couldn't find the place to
put the script. Is it under Netwerker Admin and which menu?

    Thanks you for answering
