735.0. "FATAL: can't convert directory to new version (4.2C)" by BACHUS::DEVOS (Manu Devos NSIS Brussels 856-7539) Tue Jun 03 1997 10:57

    Hello,

I was trying to upgrade an old NSR V3.0 to V4.2C these last two days
and I encountered a problem to convert the mmvolume media database,
that was so serious that nsrd was sautomatically shutdown.

I ran "nsrd -D4" and after the validation of the 32 clients (SCO + NT +
DEC Unix), the following messages are given: (Time stamp removed).

    nsrd: nsrmmdbd started, pid 6775
nsrd: using '/usr/bin/nsrmmdbd' as execpath for 'nsrmmdbd'
    nsrmmdbd: Checking volume directory
nsrmmdbd: Fatal can't convert directory to new version
nsrmmdbd: Can't mount /nsr/mm/mmvolume 'too many files created'
    nsrd: waitchild reaped, pid 6775
    nsrd: unable to start nsrmmdbd
    nsrd: shutting down
nsrd: server info:m Portions Copyright ..
    nsrd: successfull shutdown.

    I did a "mminfo -a | wc -l" and the25 actives volumes contain 68,056
savesets !!! So, maybe the message 'too many files created' is related
    to this number of savesets.

It is very important to note that this customer was running a patched
version on nsrmmdbd because the originalm NSR Version 3.0 only
supported 2500 savesets per Volume. I received from Bruce a patch on
Jan 18, 1995 which brought that number to 25,300. Aat that time, I was
upgrading from pre-version 3.0 to 3.0, and from 7 volumes present in
the Media database, only 4 were converted to the new version. Today, it
seems that it is the total number of savesets which cause the problem.

Bruce, are you a taker for this bug?
    Config: DEC 1000A-266 D.U. 4.0b + DUpatch 042597
    	    NSR V3.0 ---> NSR V4.2C
    	    TLZ867
41 volumes (6Gb) in mmvolume but 16 are recyclable.

The volumes are in general containing between 1500 and 3200 savesets
and the whole database is containing 68056 savesets.

    Thanks in advance, Manu.
