Call from a customer today: Customer is running NSR 4.3 on NT 4.0. He has set up 2 different groups (incremental and full) for each of his 8 clients;thus adding each node name in the client setup twice, one for incremental and one for full. I did not know you could add multiple names but I see you can as long as they are members of different groups. Customer wants to know 1) do the Macintosh clients have a problem with multiple groups? The Mac's do not always get backed up he see's when he looks at the message screen. It comes back with a save group cancelled message. 2) How does setting up multiple groups per client count against their licenses as far as exceeding the number they paid for? Thanks Ed NT/Backoffice

Mac stuff I don't know if they have problems or not, but if we ask Legato this then we'll need info about the client (os version, patch level, version of nsr, etc). License stuff Multiple instances of a client should be covered under one license. If it gobbles up more and complains there could be a bug. I say could be, because if they are activating archiving, sql or exchange that counts against the client licensing per system which uses it. My Comments One requires multiple instances of a client for sql/exchange clients because that is the only way to setup the .bat file for backup. Multiple client definitions can also use the same group(s), if they don't overlap their saveset contents. Unless this customer is doing exchange/sql backups, there probably is a better way of doing this via schedules. Also note that the multiple instances of the client should all have the same browse and retention times or the customer may be in for an unhappy suprise.

Please elaborate further in regards to browse and retention times and the unhappy sprise. They really want to keep fulls on line but are not worried about incrementals in between the fulls since they are adhering to Level 5 backups. Thanks Ed
