690.0. "TZ887 hangs while verifying" by ALFSS2::WHITTINGTON (Where is my Starbuck) Tue May 20 1997 08:52

    I have a customer who is running NT 4.0 /NSR 4.3 using a TZ887
    autoloader.
When they try to label a tape in the jukebox, it sits in verify mode
for hours until they finally stop it.
They originally had an eval. copy and everything was fine( they were
able to label, mount, unmount- all the usual activities you would expect
NSR to handle). Once the eval. copy expired, they got new enabler codes
for the network edition and the jukebox. Ever since then they are not
able to use the jukebox successfully.
Commands that have been tried are:
nsrjb -HEv which runs without errors.
nsrjb -Iv which sits in verify mode forever until halted.
NSR GUI - media - inventory - same as above
NSR GUI - label - same as above.

Nothing has been changed on the system ,-ie. no service packs have been
added, no additional firmware changes. BTW the TZ887 is at firmware
    DECCC34.

    Thanks

I think it is important that things worked ok during
the evaluation.... that points out that this might be
a licensing issue. Is this the same customer you
corresponded to Rich about? I don't recall seeing
the same details in that mail, this type of detail is
really important.

It sounds like they let their evaluation copy expire
before putting the new licenses on, is that so? What
shows up in their Server->Registration window?

One could try doing a partial uninstall
of NSR, renaming the nsr directory to something
else and reinstalling NSR. Then run jbconfig, delete
the eval enabler and reenter the new enablers.
Does the jukebox work now? If so, you should be
able to stop the NetWorker server service and
move the old server indexes and mmvolume files
to the original places and restart the server service
(you'd lose the fact that you'd labeled a new tape in
the media database, I suggest relabeling it if you want
it). If it doesn't work, stop the networker server service
and move all the saved files back to their original
location and restart the server service.

This is a different customer that is having this problem. If it is the
same I will duly note that.

The evaluation copy expired. They uninstalled NSR and did a clean
    install. The Server-> Registration shows Networker/Turbo 10
    and JSM - 8.

They don't need to do this since the scenerio does'nt apply here.

I had her delete the autochanger and device, and run jbconfig again and
this time we configured it instead of choosing automatically. Had her
do a label again and the verifying still stays there.

690.3just for some clarificationmontlake.zso.dec.com::lenoxthis note posted from NetNotesTue May 20 1997 12:3021
When you mean a clean install, does that mean
they did a complete uninstall (all indexes and
volume indexes were removed, not partial)?
The license names look ok, if they could just
check what it says in the Expiration Date field
for those licenses, it should either have a date
or say that there is no expiration (if they've
entered the authorization code).

Deleting the autochanger and devices won't help
much if there is a licensing issue, one would need
to remove the res files and indexes (client & media)
to check that, which is what .1 suggests. We may
want to revisit that later.

thanks,

Amy

By clean install, I am saying that the disk was reformatted, NT was
reinstalled, NSR was reinstalled. This was not done for this problem.
They had to replace their disk.
The expiration states - no expiration-

The customer is becoming very anxious since they have not been able to
back their system up in 2 weeks.
    Thanks

I think this is a duplicate of topic 562, which apparently
never was posted into the support notes topic (which means
it fell through the cracks).

Will verify as soon as I get any requisite hardware, today
or tomorrow is the earliest.

690.6this is now IPMT CFS.51504montlake.zso.dec.com::lenoxI use mailx on unix, don't send mail w/ attachmentsTue May 27 1997 18:434
This problem hasn't been duplicated in engineering
as yet with a TZ885 or a TZ877, an update will be
posted when the IPMT is resolved.
