672.0. "NSR Server on NT Workstation?" by NQOS01::tunsrv2-tunnel.imc.das.dec.com::Workbench () Mon May 12 1997 13:13

I have a customer who would like to put Networker Server on his NT
4.0 Workstation. Is the prerequisite for NT Server an absolute requirement,
i.e will not install and/or work, or simply a preferred situation?

There is no requirement to run Windows NT Server. Windows NT
Workstation is sufficient.

672.2HW configuration for an AlphastationVAXRIO::16.179.32.22::VAXRIO::ALCIDESStorage SalesTue May 13 1997 07:0226
I have a customer in the same situation, and I'm proposing an Alphastation as
a backup server.

Their environment is: 9 HP-UX, 1 AIX, 1 Solaris, 5 NT Server Intel, 5 Netware
Server. 140 Gbytes of total storage. They have a standard ethernet (10Base-T)
network.

My proposal is:

Alphastation 255/300 running Windows NT
128 Mbytes of memory
2 RZ28 disks (one for NT, other for NSR)
1 KZPAA dedicated to a TZ885
TZ885 operating in compressed mode

The customer needs the solution as cheap as possible. I'm not sure that my
assumptions in the HW configuration are correct. 128 Mbytes of memory is too
much? A dedicated KZPAA is really needed?

Where can I find documentation about Networker performance and configuration?

There are various notes here about sizing NetWorker.
Most statements apply to NetWorker on NT. You don't
say if the customer has certain contraints like if they
want a full backup to take place in x hours, or if they
are willing to spread full backups over the course of a
week, etc... These types of constraints can be an issue.

A TZ88 will run at around 3 to 5MB/s in compressed mode*,
not taking account of tape changes that is roughly 10-17 GB/hr.
Which can really put a crimp in your backup window if it
isn't done right. You can easily figure out where the major
bottlenecks will be, just look at the bandwidth of the network,
drives, buses, etc.... NetWorker will not be able to go faster
than the data can be delivered or written to tape.

* depends on compressability of your data, of course.

The bottleneck in this configuration is clearly the network.

I wouldn't expect more than about 800 KB/sec from the 10BaseT.
At that rate, a full backup of the 140 GB will take about 48
hours.

I'd suggest a schedule of bi-weekly fulls, incrementals every two
days. The five tapes in the TZ885 hold 100 GB uncompressed,
about 200 GB assuming 2:1 compression. You're real close on
getting a set of fulls and incrementals on a set of five tapes.
That's not really a problem, just something to be aware of.

Thanks for .3 and .4

Network is really the bottleneck. I didn't notice that.
I'll discuss with the customer possible alternatives.

The INTEL NetWorker server requires NTS. Alpha does not.
