645.0. "NSR backup to tape drives on separate servers" by HGOVC::CHRISTSANG () Thu May 01 1997 04:03

    Hello,

I would like to inquire about a technical issue with respect to the
working of NSR Unix Client and the distribution of the associated NSR
    Unix Client licence.

We have 2x Alphaserver 8200 running Digital Unix. The NSR Server is
included because of the bundling in NAS200. Each of the AS8200 has a
DLT tape drive locally attached. The situation may be summarised in the
    following diagram :

             DB Server AS1 Server

            ---------------- ---------------
           | NSR Server | Trucluster | NSR Server |
           | |-------------------| |
           | | | | |
           | NSR Unix Client| disks | |
    Tape 1 - | Tape 2 - |
           | | | |
            -------|-------- -------|-------
                   | |
     ------------------------------------------------------------------
                                                          FDDI Network

The two server DB and AS1 are connected on the network. They are
configured in TruCluster Availability Server with shared disk storage -
    NO tape.

At the moment DB Server also acts as a NSR client to the NSR Server of
AS1 (that is the NSR Unix Client licence is placed in AS1 for this
    purpose).

    With the above conditions,

    1. Can the user at DB Server perform backup function to the locally
attached tape drive "Tape 1" and, AT THE SAME TIME, backup data via the
network to "Tape 2" which is attached to the AS1 ?

    2. If the above is possible, what NSR licences do I need to add to the
DB server and AS1 server ?

    Please advise.

    Best regards
    Chris

645.1 no remote tape in Networker !!!BRSDVP::DEVOSManu Devos NSIS Brussels 856-7539Thu May 01 1997 09:1223
    Hi Chris,

The user can perform "NON NETWORKER" backup to the local tape.
Concerning Networker, it is NOT supporting "remote" tape. So, the final
answer to your question is : NO, you cannot backup data to a tape in
one system and another one in another system with NetWorker.

In an ASE cluster, you always need a "decnsr-clust-client" license for
each member of the cluster except if one of the member is the Networker
Sever, in which case it should only have the "decnsr-net-server"
license. The "decnsr-clusr-client" license gives you the right to
backup the cluster member AND ALL the ASE SERVICES .

    Manu.

Yes, you can do this, but you need to have the NetWorker server
installed on the DB Server, and run it as an independent backup
engine to backup to tape drive connected to DB Server. AS1 will
be backing up data from DB Server over the networker to the tape
drive connected to AS1.

Both AS1 and DB Server need the NetWorker server license
(provided as part of NAS 200), and both AS1 and DB Server need a
cluster client license to backup the ASE services and the "other"
system.

A lot of this cluster licensing stuff is described in note 44.

645.3What if only NSR Unix Client licences are used ?HGOVC::CHRISTSANGSun May 04 1997 21:0319
    Hello,

I would like to further inquire about one situtaion.

What is the impact if we do not provide a NSR Cluster Client licence
but instead provide NSR Unix Client licence for each of the DB Server
    and AS1 Server ?

Can we still backup the database data on the Trucluster shared disks ?

I believe without the NSR Cluster Client licence, we cannot backup the
ASE Services. Is this all the impact ?

    Please advise.

    Best regards
    Chris

A UNIX client license is not sufficient to backup a system that
is a member of a cluster. A cluster client license is REQUIRED.

When the client detects that it is running on a cluster host, it
reports that fact to the NetWorker server. The NetWorker server,
in turn, requests a cluster client license from LMF and will not
use a UNIX client license.

This is the way it is designed. If you are finding that the UNIX
client license is sufficient to backup a machine that is a member
of a cluster, that is a bug and needs to be fixed.
