644.0. "Pools & Networker V4.3 on NT4" by DOTZ::AS_BRETT (Ciarn Brett....) Wed Apr 30 1997 13:09

Hi there,

Can anyone explain how to disable the Default Pool in Networker???

I'm running Networker v4.3 on NT4 - I've 2 client which I've scheduled to be
backed-up each evening but instead of it using the pool I've set-up it always
asks for a tape from the Default pool.

The exact message I see is:

media alert: backup to pool 'Default' waiting for 1 writable backup tape.

Any ideas - please.

Ciaran.

If your pool is setup correctly, it should work.
Pools are not intuitively obvious, so perhaps you
could put down the pool definition and client
names involved and whether the server is part
of the two clients involved?

You cannot disable the 'Default' pool, only
define other pools to be used first.

There are numerous posts on pools in the old
conference... dir on 'pool' in decwet::decnsr
various notes would definitely provide a background
for understanding pool behavior (this would be
better than us just telling you what is wrong
because then you are more likely to understand
what is going on).

Amy,

Thanks for your help so far.

I've got 2 clients and the server which are part of the Pool I've set-up.

The Pool is set-up as follows:

Name: PSGREOOFFICE
Enabled: Yes
Pool Type: Backup
Label Template: PSGREOOFFICE
Groups: none selected
Clients: reopsgsrv01.reo.dec.com - server
                reopsgdc1.reo.dec.com - Client 1
                reopsgdc2.reo.dec.com - Client 2
Levels: Full
Device: \\.\Tape0
Store Indexs: Yes
Auto Media: No

I've captured all the screens if you to be able to see the complete set-up.
There on a share \\psgeusbpmd3\software$ folder [NSR.DOC].

Hope you can help,

Many thanks,
Ciaran.

Remember that the index saves for a client may be level 9,
your pool only lists FULL. I would also recomend leaving the
device out of the pool definition. You control where the
save goes by the available labeled tapes.

Thanks Roger,

I found this article on the Legato Web page:

Waiting for writable tape message
If the message `waiting for writable tape from pool poolname' appears
even though writable tapes exist for the Pool indicated, the cause might
be one of the following:

(a) Pools are level-sensitive. For example, if the Pool indicated in the
message does not include Level 9 saves, the save set indexes are directed
to a different Pool (usually, the Default pool). If no tapes are
available in the required pool, NetWorker will wait to complete the save
and a `waiting for writable tape...' pending message appears.
(b) In some cases, NetWorker fails to automatically recycle a valid,
recyclable tape. If enough recyclable tapes from the pools being used are
readily available, try one of the following solutions.

The interesting thing is - this doesn't happen on Alpha systems it's
only Intel installations.

To fix the problem I selected levels 'Full' and 'Level 9' in the Pool I
created and it works fine.

Thanks again for your help,

Ciaran.
