622.0. "Many sessions for the same client?" by VAXRIO::ALCIDES (Alcides Rocha DC - Brazil) Thu Apr 24 1997 08:00

The Networker SPD says that 32 concurrent backup/recover sessions are
supported. It also says that 16 backup devices are supported
    simultaneously.

    My question is:

If Networker is running on a system with multiple backup devices and
there is a client with lots of data to be copied, is it possible to
start multiple sessions with the same client and use many backup
devices in parallel to backup data of this client?

It's not clear for me in the SPD if multiple sessions can be started
for a single client or if only one session can be started for each
    client.

I need this information to propose a solution for a customer.

Your question has many layers of complexity to it and I'm
afraid a simple yes or no answer will mislead you.

How much experience with NetWorker do you have?
622.2Not much experience ...VAXRIO::ALCIDESAlcides Rocha DC - BrazilFri Apr 25 1997 06:2522
I don't have much experience with Networker.
We have it installed in some customer sites, mainly for backup of PCs
    and UNIX workstations.

There is a customer who intends to have a backup server in the network
    for multiplatform systems.
One of these systems is a big Digital UNIX server with 350 Gbytes of
storage. The system has several databases that need to be copied to
    tapes frequently.
The idea is to backup those databases in parallel. The backup server
would start multiple sessions to the Digital UNIX client, and make the
backup of the databases using DLT tapes in parallel.

Because of my lack of experience with Networker, I don't know if this
configuration is acceptable for the purpose intended. Maybe for this
big server they'll have to install a dedicated tape library in a local
    SCSI bus.

    I'll appreciate any idea.

    Thanks

Yes, NetWorker allows multiple sessions from each client.
This is limited depending on the version but it is at least
four per client. For UNIX each session must be from a
different disk. This only applies to saves started as
a group such as from the automatic schedule. If you
start the saves on the client via cron I don't think that
there is any hard limit, just what is reasonable with system
	and network load.

    Thanks, Roger.
That's the answer I was looking for.

If I use multiple TZ89s, maybe I'll have a bottleneck in the network
card. I'll have to check the configuration in detail.
