620.0. "NSR/NT questions" by NQOS01::user3.bqo.dec.com::Roper () Wed Apr 23 1997 16:31

I have a customer who is very interested in using NSR on Windows NT to backup
their manufacturing and financial systems. We discussed the
capabilities of NSR and they had some addtional questions that I couldn't
anser (big surprise, right?).

1 - On a VMS machine, you can perform an Image Backup so that you can restore
a corrupted system disk. Can NSR do an Image Backup or how do address this
beyond mirroring of drives> (ie. hard system failure and need to restore to
a different system)

2 - Is there or when will there be an Oracle DB module for NT?

3 - The SPD does not show support for Optical. Will NSR support Optical
storage on NT?

4 - When is VMS going to be a client (for NSR/NT and NST/Unix)? (Is June
still on?)

5 - Do we have any performance information comparing NSR on NT/Alpha and
NT/Intel?

thanks

    >No, NetWorker does not do image backup. Legato is addressing diaster

Exactly what is the customer looking for? A comparision based on equal
purchase priced systems? Total cost of ownership? Maximum possible
performance? What exactly? If you say, "well, NT/Alpha runs on an 8
CPU Turbolaser, what does Intel have that's comparable?", would that be
    a satisfactory answer?

current off the cuff answers...

1. Not currently. There is something in the works for the next
release that I'm going to be looking at in my copious spare
time. Should make some or all disaster recovery much better.
I wouldn't compare it to image backup though.

2. Please send mail to the PM for this. (DECWET::BROWNE)

3. Not currently.

4. Someone else should be answering this one. If there is a
client, it should not matter who the server is.

5. Not currently. With the performance enhancements for the
future release I don't think NSR would make the difference
for sale of alpha over intel because intel will work really
well for local backups as will alpha. What other reasons
would you want a performance comparison?
