527.0. "Recover a TZ885 tape on a TL812 ?" by TRN02::FRASSINO () Tue Mar 25 1997 14:17
Hi all,
suppose to have several tapes backed up on a TZ885, so on a single
drive /dev/nrmt1h, linked to a Pool "Pool TZ885".
The label of these tapes, as per note 511, contains also the Pool name.
Well, suppose to have to migrate all the stuff on another machine with a
Tl812 ( aha, now it works ...). The nsr.res file is no longer valid,
since the TL812 has 4 drives.
But, copying mmvolume db, with nsrjb -I says that the label is well
known. Trying to mount the label is verified, but NOT mounted.
If you try to recover data, you can browse them ( index file) and
volume says you with tapes are needed.
But the nwadmin continue to ask for a tape. In the drive , the well
known tape is in loop, continuously checking the label without mounting
itself.
I suspect to have to create a Pool exactly named "Pool TZ885" using
only one tape of tha TL812 TO EXACTLY simulate the TZ885, and in
addition to downgrade Tl812 tape definition to TZ87 ( not TZ88 ).
Should be enough to "emulate" an old Pool and a TZ885 on a TL812 ??
I'm testing NSR in depth, isn't it ??
Ciao !!

| If there are no pool restrictions on the new drives it should
work asuming the NetWorker index files were migrated properly.
Generally placing a pool limit on a drive is not needed since
this can be controled by labeling and loading the tapes in
the proper devices. It may also have some strange side effects
like you have noted since it only checks the pool validation
after the tape is place in the drive, not when it is selected.
All the other pool criteria is checked when the volume is selected.
