519.0. "Hostame UPPERCASE, MMRECOVER failed !!!!!!" by TRN02::FRASSINO () Sat Mar 22 1997 12:59

    Hi all,
this is the second problem I've encountered on HOSTNAME uppercase, and
    it's really serious.
As probably you remember, in a previous note I've had to manage a
disaster recovery situation, and there I found the hostname relevance
    in the recovery process.
So, having to rebuild a new server, I tell to the customer: an equal
    hostname is a prerequisite !
    Ok, the hostname is PSAPOPC1 ( note -1 ).
Aha, I scanner -B the last tape, I found the bootstrap ssid and I
suppose to have all under control.
I started mmrecov, and this dramatic error message appears:

nsrindexasm: unable to translate /nsr/index/psapopc1/db into a
    hostname.

All is recovered, mmvolume, nsr.res, nsrjb.res but the server db is
    absent, due to this error.

The rc.config file, the /etc/hosts file are IDENTICAL to the
"old"server, apart the IP address. I suppose this is not an issue.
To make the long story short, I can not recover the server on another
with the same hostname due to HOSTNAME in uppercase ??

Tha same error appears is I change the hostname in lowercase.

Now, a strong help is really needed.

    Thanks in advance !!

    Bruce,
at this point seems that this is a philosophical discussion.
I would only know if the error

nsrindexasm: unable to translate /nsr/index/psapopc1/db into a
    hostname.

    depends on this upper/lower misunderstanding.

    P.S.
unfortunately, shuffing the notesfile ( today was Sunday ... so AT HOME
    ) I see

Note 408.0 Problem with networker server name in uppercase 1 reply

Hi ,

Problem with networker server with hostname in uppercase :

The customer site in a big VMS site and they got their first DUNIX ASE cluster
config . They decided to set the hostnames in uppercase .

Is it possible under networker ( 4.2? ) to have the nsr server in uppercase
and how ? ( the customer is running 4.2A )

-1- if server hostname == lowercase -> no problem , the server is a client of
itself.

-2- if server hostname == uppercase , the server sees itself as a new client
and
reclaims a client license ( putting an alias in uppercase and lowercase in the
client==server setup doesn't help ) .

NOTA : in the main nwadmin window and in the Server Setup window , the
server name is always in lowercase despite the server hostname is in
uppercase .

Thanks for help ,
Christian

This is a problem, and an IPMT is currently open on it. We're
working on a fix for this. When we have a fix, it will show up
as a patch in the UNIX patch topic.

Wes

At this point, may I have an answer more than "politically correct" ??

Sorry, but so many problems feel me so bad ...

    Always appreciating your job
