513.1 | | DECWET::CARRUTHERS | Life gets easier when you realize you can't have everything. | Fri Mar 21 1997 08:58 | 10 |
| Thanks for opening this topic for us. We will post information
about the DIGITAL UNIX patches for NetWorker 4.2C here as it
becomes available.
Right now, you are a little ahead of us. To the best of our
knowledge the official DIGITAL UNIX patches are not yet available
on the DIGITAL patch Web site -- but that is OK, since NetWorker V4.2C
is not YET shipping.

513.2 | V4.2C required OS patch availablilty | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Sat Mar 22 1997 16:41 | 14 |
|
The official OS patches are in review, it is expected that they will appear
on the specified web site in a week or so.
We will NOT be placing the kernel patches on the NetWorker pages, or on our
local FTP area for 2 reasons:
1. The UNIX Support Group (in charge of the patches) asked us not to (and
they are God =)
2. The patches are in very common areas, and subsequent patches may supercede
the listed patches (quickly) and the best place to check that would be
the patch website (we don't have the resources to keep up with them).

513.4 | Patches may be delayed | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Thu Apr 10 1997 12:14 | 8 |

We are expecting the patches to appear shortly, please be patient.
The UESG had a problem generating the setld patch kits, the initial patches will
be a (probably messy) manual installation and were submitted to TIMA earlier
this week.

513.5 | V4.2C OSF patches are now available | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Fri Apr 11 1997 12:49 | 16 |
| The patches are located on:
ftp://ftp.service.digital.com/public/Digital_UNIX/
in their respective O/S version directory. They are named as follows:
DU 4.0 duv40networker-bl5er
DU 4.0a duv40anetworker-bl5er
DU 4.0b duv40bnetworker-bl5er
These are manual install versions of the patches -- we expect the setld
versions to appear (under patch IDs specified in the Release Notes) shortly.

513.7 | manual installs aren't as easy as they should be... | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Tue Apr 15 1997 12:35 | 25 |
| re: -.1
sorry that these are painful, we're really waiting for the setld versions that
real users would expect. Until then, bear with us.
Mikael> Also, there is a file in the kit, advfs.mod, that is not in the README.
actually DUV40BNetWorker-BL5ER.txt has advfs.mod listed as being in:
Patch 70.01 (OSF410-400176-1) contains the following inventory:
It should be installed if the OSFADVFSBIN410 subset is installed on your
system.
/sys/BINARY/advfs.mod subset OSFADVFSBIN410
CHECKSUM: 16064 1130
which is misleading, OSFADVFSBIN410 is normally installed as part of the base
OS so advfs.mod from the patch kit should be manually installed.
I'm going to try (again) the patch on a vanilla V4.0B system, it would help if
you knew, if there were any other patches installed on the system on which you
are trying this.

513.8 | some progress...but not enough | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Tue Apr 15 1997 14:59 | 9 |
| re: -.2
have duplicated the vm_page_free_swap undefined on a vanilla V4.0B system,
will be looking into the problem, have already sent a summary to the UESG
contact. Odd though, the pre-release engineering patch didn't have this problem.
stay tuned (and cross your fingers)

513.9 | good news | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Tue Apr 15 1997 16:45 | 17 |
|
The UESG has come through with flying colors -- there should be new patch kits
appearing soon on the internet site
ftp://ftp.service.digital.com/public/Digital_UNIX/
under the following names:
DU 4.0 duv40networker-bl5er-1
DU 4.0a duv40anetworker-bl5er-1
DU 4.0b duv40bnetworker-bl5er-1
this should fix the V4.0B vm_page_free_swap problem.
I'll test it when it gets there =)

513.11 | I checked them out too... | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Thu Apr 17 1997 12:24 | 8 |
| The new patches appear to work (and install!!) correctly on both DU V4.0A and
DU V4.0B (still looking for a DU4.0 machine)
Unfortunately it appears that the new patches haven't appeared on the FTP server
yet (for general distribution) I know the request has been made, so it should
be there RSN.

513.12 | they're there now... | DECWET::SDY | Look out!!..Support Rookie sez... | Thu Apr 17 1997 12:33 | 5 |

Have a good time.

513.13 | Why | KERNEL::BARRETTOT | | Thu Apr 24 1997 10:41 | 24 |
| Does the patch kit contained on the FTP site mentioned for V4.0B contain the
patch for both 71.0 and 70.01 as documented in the NSR 4.2C release
notes ?
It would be a good idea to put a readme file on the following Web site
mentioned in the release notes to ensure that customers undertstand the
state of play.
http://www.service.digital.com/html/patch_main.html
THE NSR V4.2C product has been released in the APRIL 1997 CD
distribution. The CSC (Basingstoke, UK) had no idea of where to
get the patch from or when the patch would be available.
If the patches are not available and there is NO information on the
web site mentioned and the CSC has not been given details of how to
assist customers, then maybe the product should be put on Engineering
hold.
regards,
Tony

yes, it does, in fact you can just look at the readme online at the ftp site
before fetching the patch.
We don't have access to the www.service.digital ftp site, the general custom is
to have both the patch and readme available -- if you look through the ftp site
you'll see that in addition to the patch tar file, it has a checksum file, a
coverletter as well as the readme.
THE NSR V4.2C product has been released in the APRIL 1997 CD
distribution. The CSC (Basingstoke, UK) had no idea of where to
get the patch from or when the patch would be available.
The release notes for V4.2C specify both the access and names of the patches
that are required. The only difference is that the manual patch names (BL5ER-1)
were released as an interim step while the UESG worked out it's setld creation
problems. When the (previously identified) setld patches are available they will
be placed on the ftp site and thhe BL5ER-1 patches removed. This was done after
the LPCD went to press so the only other route was to post it in this notes
conference.
Remember that we're talking about 3 separate groups who maintain ownership
rights, we (SMS NetWorker) are the customer of the patches, the UEG/UESG owns
creating/maintaining the patches, and yet another group owns the ftp site.
Regarding CSC training, we held a short session for our US Atlanta site,
unfortunately we don't know all of the contacts for the Non-US CSC sites (I hear
that there is 1 per country in Europe) I have an internal training page under
construction that I am willing to make available. If you are a CSC who needs
early access to materials, send me email ([email protected]) and I'll send you
a pointer.
