511.0. "Can volumes be re-assigned to a different pool" by SANITY::LEMONS (And we thank you for your support.) Thu Mar 20 1997 08:07

[Now, before you ask, I did read note 21.* before writing this :)]

We have a number of volumes that are assigned to a pool. We've written
savesets to these volumes. We've recently created a new pool. Is it
possible to re-assign the volumes from the old pool to the new pool?

    Thanks!

511.1yes, by relabelling the tapesDECWET::EVANSNSR EngineeringThu Mar 20 1997 09:263
which erases all the data on the tape (logically, not physically).

The pool relation is contained in the tape label for NetWorker.

So, if I logically erased the tapes, I could scan the dat back into the
indicies? Even so, it sounds like I'm better off leaving the columes
in their pool, and just waiting for them to expire.

    Thanks!

well... there would be record overwrites which probably would not match up
with the previously written records, so there would be some bizarre binary
patterns where the old & new "met"... if the scanning software survived
that, it might be able to reconstruct parts of the saveset - you'd lose
the header chunk (the one that used to be next to the old label).

Usually, us mere mortals just re-label a tape and call it "empty" and
proceed to fill it back up with "new" data. However, there are those who
need/want/can recover data from magnetic media up to 7 layers
 "deep" (overwrites).

  ya.

If you relabel a DLT tape it will refuse to read past
the new end of tape (after the two label records). It
will give a ENOSPACE error and refuse to get your old data.

So, no you can't change pools until the data on the
	tape is expendable.

    Gotcha. Thanks, both!
