| Take a look at 44.1 re: licensing. If you still have questions,
post them here.

| Well -
I tried your suggestion but you cannot reply to that note. My questions still
stands and yes, I had already read that note. I would just quote the UNIX
client license however the customer (and I) have a question on when you just
sell the client and when you sell the Save Set Consolidation server license.
The doucment says "in environemnts where both the client and server are
Digital UNIX systems". This is that environment and I want to make sure they
have everything they need to back up their UNIX clients.
Thanks....

| Save Set Consolidation is an add on feature that is only needed by
some customers. To add clients you just need enough client
licenses on the server of the proper type as per the other note.

| What does save set consolidation do? Why would a customer buy or need it?

| More questions...
SO.... what I need to sell them is (2) QL-XYXAL-3B (Unix Client License) and
(1) QA-XYXAE-H8 (UNIX software media and documentation - there's also
QA-054A*-** listed in the SPD for Digital UNIX Server and Add-on modules -
which is the right one?). The customer still has a question about the SSC
and what it is to determine if he needs that or not, but if so, then
QL-YULA9-AA is also needed.
right?

| SSC is a means of conserving network bandwidth at the
expense of server CPU cycles. We hear that customers
are tending to use it to backup HSM systems because
an SSC backup of a client only involves 1 full backup,
EVER. After the first full, the client only does
incremental backups, which makes it ideal for systems
with very large amounts of slowing changing data which
the customer does not want to have backup itself.
The "C" part of SSC is consolidation by the server of
the client's previous "full" backup and its incrementals
since that full into a new "full" backup. The server does
this by writing out a new full backup saveset to a
volume by reading the previous full backup saveset volumes
and the incremental saveset volumes and combining the
data appropriately.
To get in one last detail, the server, in addition to
consolidating into a new full, can consolidate
incrementals into a new level backup. If you don't
know what a level backup is, you might want to have
a look at the product documentation.

| To backup Digital UNIX clients to an existing NetWorker server,
you need two things:
1) NetWorker client licenses to load on the NetWorker *server*.
If the NetWorker server is Digital UNIX or NT Alpha, you
purchase client licenses from Digital. If the server is not a
Digital system, you purchase the client licenses from the
provider of the server software.
From your description in .0, I believe that you have a Digital
UNIX system running NetWorker, so the UNIX client licenses you
purchase are QL-XYXAL-3B.
2) NetWorker for Digital UNIX client software media. There are
two ways to get this. The client kit is on the Digital UNIX
Layered Products CD, QA-054AA-H8, or can be ordered separately
on the Digital Client Kit (DCK), QA-XYXAE-H8. If you order the
DCK, you get hardcopy installation docs too.
Hope this helps,
Wes
