467.0. "HSM test fails on DU4.0b !!!!!!!!!" by TRN02::FRASSINO () Fri Mar 07 1997 02:04

    Hi all,
I'm trying to install NSR v4.2C on both v.40a and v4.0b OS versions.
    This is the situation:

I've copied from HSM Field Test Home page the current beta filed test
    kit

    ft-kit-020697.tar.gz

Inside I can find, in addition to the NSR kit, 3 directories named
    DU4.0, DU4.0a, DU4.0b, with kernel hooks.

I've performed a fresh installation on a workstation with 2 disks.
    On disk 0 I've installed v4.0a, on disk 1 v4.0b.
I've used kernel hooks for both v4.0a and v4.0b and with a lite OS
onstallation the kernel was built correctly on both versions.

    But:
    - if I compile run_36779 on v4.0a it runs correctly.
    - if I compile run_36779 on v4.0b it fails in runtime with the
    following error:

    F_GETTIMES = Invalid argument

I can't figure out if the problem is due to kernel hooks or the test
    itself.

I point out that I've tried to redo from start this job several times,
but the error on v4.0b is ALWAYS the same.
Have I to install othe OS patches before kernel hooks ?
NO mention about this is contained in release notes, so I suppose the
    answer is no.

Please, any help will be VERY appreciated.

    best regards.

467.1Field Test vs SSBDECWET::EVANSNSR EngineeringFri Mar 07 1997 11:1417
Pierpa --

so everyone else knows this... the SSB kit will contain overlay-safe
patches generated by the kernel folks which will solve this difficulty.
The Field Test kit *by necessity* had to use specific kernel patches
that are NOT overlay-safe, ergo, *any* patches to the kernel *at all*
collide with the HSM patches, and mess things up.
The indicator test shows how HSM would behave, so if it fails, so
would HSM. But... we believe the overlay-safe patches you need to obtain
for the HSM kit will fix this.

If you still see this behaviour *after* SSB kits, then please file a bug
so we can fix it ASAP. Alternatively, you can install a no-patch V4.0B
and apply *only* the HSM patches, rebuild your kernel, and see how the
test program behaves. I would expect it to work.

    Bruce,
perhaps I was not clear enough.
I've installed a NON-PATCHED, clear, normal, Digital Unix v4.0b from
    CD-ROM on my workstation.
After that, I applied v4.0b kernel hooks from NSR v4.2C, and the kernel
    was rebuilt correctly.
At the end, I compile run_xxx and IT FAILS with the error listed in .0.

This is really unbelievable, but this is the state of the art for NSR
    v4.2C on DU v4.0b: UNUSABLE.

I would like to see a reply from sdy.

Thanks a lot for your help.

467.3HSM FT kit &DU 4.0B (don't use the FT kit with the forthcoming patches)DECWET::SDYI'm late, I'm late...Sat Mar 08 1997 13:2441
Pierpa,

First of all, let me apologize for not answering this thread more promptly.
I have been in the midst of getting V4.2C (HSM) ready to ship, and have not
been monitoring this notes conference very closely.

I had thought it was clear from my answer to 435, that the FT kit would not
be supported in this forum (and shouldn't be). Since I had not heard a
response back to my initial email to you (you did get it didn't you?), I
  figured everything was fine.

During our testing we installed the FT patches on a vanilla 4.0B machine
(a 3000/400) and they ran just fine. Unfortunately that won't help you much.

The only thing I can suggest is that you will have to wait for the April LPCD
release of 4.2C and discontinue using the FT kit with 4.0B for the following
  reasons:

	1. The kernel hooks that are used for the released version of V4.2C are
not compatible with the FT kit release. They were changed by the UEG
           after FT had closed.

	2. It would be an unreasonable use of resources to try and track down
the source of your 4.0B incompatiblity, especially with the change
           in the kernel modifications.

I'm sorry but there's not much more we can do for you at this late of a date.

For those of you who might be poking around in our FTP or FT areas, note:

The release version of NetWorker 4.2C is INCOMPATIBLE with the Field
Test kernel mods. If you were a registered FT site you should have
received email detailing your options. Un-registered FT sites should
send email to one of the specified addresses below.

Again, NetWorker HSM FT related queries should be sent to [email protected] or
direct to me at [email protected]. They should NOT be posted in this notes
conference.
