463.0. "Extra spaces in servers file on client install" by UNXA::MOK (Mitch Kulberg) Wed Mar 05 1997 11:27

Greetings and Salutations,

I just upgraded my networker server and clients to 4.2b.

The procedure went very smoothly by the way. I was very impressed.

    .... EXCEPT....

For one small problem. On 'SOME' of our systems (about 15) the file
/nsr/res/servers was incorrectly created with TWO SPACES preceding the
system name of our networker server.

This caused backups to fail on these systems because the name lookup
for the server failed and we got a 'not permitted' error. A manual
change to this file and restarting the nsrexecd corrected the problem.

The weird thing is I could not figure out what combination of
circumstances causes this problem. I have other systems running the
same rev of the OS and the same everything where it works fine. Go figure.

Anyway, all the systems I looked at closely were:

Digital UNIX V4.0 Rev 386 Alpha
POLYCENTER Netowrker Save and Restore V4.2B (client)

I looked through the nsr_ize script but couldn't locate the problem
although I can tell you that it is NOT the following:

The OS revision (I have systems running 4.0 Rev 386 where it works fine)
The Shell used by root (I tried both sh and ksh)
The PATH (I set the path the same on system where it worked and didn't)

I tried about a million things but nothing worked. Since we install
networker using an automated script (this problem happens when doing a manual
install as well), I just added a few lines to the script to update the servers
file. In other words, I have a workaround so this is not urgent. Just thought
you'd like to know.

Keep up the good work...

Thanks,
Mitch

463.1And why can I add the same system multiple timesUNXA::MOKMitch KulbergWed Mar 05 1997 11:3913
Almost forgot one other thing.

While I was testing various possible solutions, I noticed one annoying
thing. Every time I re-run nsr_ize, it added another line to the file
/nsr/res/servers with the exact same node name as the previous line.

I would suggest that when a person enters a name that is already
in the servers file, that it not be added again and perhaps even inform the
user, OR, wipe out the servers file every time.

Thanks...
Mitch

463.2thank you!DECWET::EVANSNSR EngineeringWed Mar 05 1997 15:408
we knew about the 2 space thing in nsr_ize (and/or /bin/nsrexecd.sh)
and thought we squashed that bug... guess not.

We're watching our next rlease carefully to insure this is NOT there.
I'll add your suggestion to not allow dup's in the servers file
 to our next release list.
