See topic 23 for other single server info.
Be very sure that the name you use for the local client
matches what the nsr server thinks it's name is. What
names are you using? Does the system have multiple names?
I'm kinda confused because you should have the one client defined
by default.
The client license won't work when there isn't a network
server license on the system (DECNSR-NET-SVR).

462.2 | Confused as to whats supposed to work. | GEOFFN::WRIGHT | | Thu Mar 06 1997 06:08 | 58 |
|
Hi,
I am having difficulty in understanding what is supposed to work.
Configuration 1
---------------
V4.0a UNIX
V3.2A NSR
No Server License
No Client License
This configuration works in Single Server mode.
Configuration 2
---------------
V4.0b UNIX
V3.2A NSR
No Server License
No Client License
This configuration works in Single Server mode.
Configuration 3
---------------
V4.0b UNIX
V4.2A NSR
No Server License
No Client License
This configuration attempts to work in Single Server mode but complains
about the client license.
Configuration 4
---------------
V4.0b UNIX
V4.2A NSR
Server License (From NAS200 license/subset).
No Client License
This configuration attempts to work in normal mode but complains
about the client license.
Question
========
Was it fortuitous that V3.2A worked without a client license or is there
a problem with V4.2A when trying to work in single server mode without
a client license ?

Single server essentially is for a no license situation.
It shouldn't be complaining about missing any client
licenses. However, if the system is setup oddly it may
not recognize that the server and think it is a client.
Which explains my questions on naming.
Part of my confusion comes when you initially said you
were trying to add the local client. You already should
have one client when you install single server, you
don't get to add any others, you only can have a saveset
of ALL, that is a limitation of single server (which
should be defined in the topic I referenced in .1).
Why are you trying to add another client? Why aren't you
using the client that was there on setup?

Hi,
The only reason that I am trying to add a / the client is that it fails to
add the client during the installation.
If I use setld -d ... to remove the V4.2A sub sets on the UNIX V4.0b
system and then install the V3.2A sub sets then the client is created
correctly and everything works as expected.
If I then remove the V3.2A subsets and install the V4.2A subsets then
the client is not created and cannot be created subsequently.
The system itself is a...
AlphaServer 300
2Gb system disk
4Gb user disk
24Gb Raid 5
2 x Ethernet Cards
1 x ATI MACH64 Graphics
1 x RAID controller
256 Mbyte Memory
UNIX V4.0b
NSR V4.2A
If I install a client license and then install V4.2A then the client is
created correctly during the installation and is modifiable using
nwadmin.
Is there any specific information that I can gather / post here ?
Regards
Steven Wright

Well a few more questions and suggestions to try out before
we log this as a bug... (let's focus on the single server
version, i.e. no NSR licenses on the system at all).
1. Did you completely remove NSR when taking NSR 3.2A
off the system or did you only do a partial deinstall?
2. Did you do anything to the nsr.res file manually?
3. Remove any NSR licenses on the system, try shutting
NSR down, remove the res/nsr.res file and restart nsrd.
Do you now have a proper client definition?
4. I am assuming the system was upgraded from v4.0a to
V4.0b, is that so?
5. Did anything about the system setup change? Names,
bind, etc..?

go into single server mode with this license installed. Please remove

| Ok, after further examination I think I may have found the problem. It looks
like Networker is failing to identify DOUBTFULL-AS01 as the server because
the name is uppercase. I'll put together quick test version of nsrd with a fix
and get that out later today.
