438.0. "NetWorker HSM License & using Disks instead tape??" by DEKVC::CHANGKYOOYI () Tue Feb 25 1997 00:38

Hello,

Could you inform me as the belows...

1. Announcement schedule for NetWorker HSM on Digital UNIX v4.0
	Apr-1997 : right?

2. Is the NSR & NetWorker HSM posible to use Disks instead of DLT or juke-box
   for backup & migration?

3. Is it possible to order now ? How do I order NetWorker HSM licenses ?

Thanks,
ChangKyoo.

  NetWorker can backup to a disk if you create a file and back up
  to it as an optical device. However, a file acts as a device
  instead of a tape volume, and you cannot switch from file to file
  as you would switch from tape to tape.

It doesn't put a filesystem on those disks like one might expect from
using other HSM products.

438.3Optical Libraries may be an optionDECWET::RWALKERRoger Walker - Media ChangersTue Feb 25 1997 11:4214
	If access speed is an issue the optical libraries provide
	a way to compromise between space and cost. They are very
	quick to change platers and to reach the data. They are only
	so so on the actual data transfer.

	Optical libraries do provide the normal automated media
	management that NetWorker has with tapes including automatic
	recycling of volumes with expired data.

	Media pools can be defined to direct the use of devices if
	optical and tape are both in use. I'm not sure how detailed
	this control will be with the HSM module. Generally you
	want your large and seldom access data on tape and your
	smaller more frequently accessed data on optical.
