433.0. "Recovering NT & WIN95 shared folders" by ALERT::BMCQUILLAN () Thu Feb 20 1997 21:47

    Hi there,

Can anyone let me know what the recommended procedure is
for recovering shared directory information from directories that have
been mistakenly removed. I'm testing some recovery procedures on our
site and have set up some test file shares on both NT and 95 client
systems with share names and password protection. The NT shares were
also setup with access permission for particular groups etc. The shared
areas were then backed up using networker 4.3 Client (NT) and 4.2 (95)
Client. All shared directories were then deleted. After the normal
recover operation ,both the NT & 95 clients recovered the data OK but
    the shares weren't recreated.

I had the same problem last month when recreating a disk
stripe set on a NT server where there had been unrecoverable disk
corruption. Luckily the share details had been kept hardcopy and were
    receated manually from the listing.

I need to know what needs done in these circumstances as I
am currently looking at configuring Networker for Digital Ayr's backoffice
infrastructure and the site DIGITAL2 file & print resource domains where there will be
increasingly complex domain access permissions, trust relationships etc being
setup across the site NT infrastructure.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Shared directory information is stored in the Registry
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
LanmanServer\Shares. So as long as you haven't
removed the entries in that key and the shares were
restored to the exact same path, I would think you
would not have a problem in having them automatically
re-created after restore. Have a look at your Registry...

    Thanks Mark,

this has answered my point on NT but can you let me know
what file needs recovered for Windows 95 shares.

You know, you could do a search with regedit.exe to find where
they are stored in the 95 registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Network\LanMan
