I had this mail from one of my customers... I am unable to find this documented can you assist. "Hi Avril, The customer has finally agreed to do something about his problem and = that is why I am emailing you again. He presently has an 88 slot HP jukebox with double sided platters and = has increased the number of slots to 144 out of which he is only using = 128 slots. Consequently, earlier he had 176 sides (88 x 2) and now he = wants 128 x 2 sides. He does NOT want to lose his earlier data and does = NOT want to backup and restore is data on the jukebox from tape. In = other words, he would like to make an ONLINE change without losing his = old data. What does he have to do ? For your reply, you may reply by email to me here (put Attn: Krishan at = the top) or fax me at +9712-724151 as today is the start of the weekend = (Thu + Fri) and I need to answer this call on Saturday asap. Regards, Krishan" Can you assist? Thanks Avril

I don't understand how one would increase slots, either you got a new jukebox and you want to put the old media in it or you just aren't using all the slots in the first place. Did they switch jukeboxes without doing anything with NSR? Don't do that! If you got a new jukebox delete the jukebox (make sure that all the drives are empty first). Remove the old jukebox & media, put in the new jukebox and fill it up with the old media. Redefine the jukebox that is now there. After that, do an inventory (so that the jukebox knows where the volumes it already knows about are). This isn't documented as such, since we document how to add jukeboxes one could extrapolate from there how to switch jukeboxes. If they already switched media and jukebox, delete the old jukebox and redefine a new one. Note that deleting a jukebox does not mean deleting the volumes in the jukebox. If the jukebox already had the number of slots but the user wants use more of the slots, adjust the available slots value appropriately.

Avril, Sounds like Krishan's customer has an HP 330fx. I think it's one of the expandable ones. Probably the easiest way will be to delete the jukebox, recreate it with the correct number of slots, then do an inventory. The previous backup data won't disappear, but the inventory may take a while. There may be other ways (messing about with the available slots field in nsrjb.res), but recreating the jukebox should be much easier. Wes

There is no safe way of changing the number of slot other than deleting and recreating the jukebox. After years of programming and testing jukeboxes I still can't get it to work most times if I try to hack up the res file. I should only take 15-30 minutes to get back in operation on an optical by recreating the device and doing the inventory. It would be faster if they had barcodes but we can't get them to fit on those skinny platters. Please be sure to follow the exact steps in Amy's reply (.1) |
