396.0. "Problem with a Mac client to a NT Server" by ALFSS2::WHITTINGTON (Plug & Plague) Fri Feb 07 1997 12:29

I have a customer who has MAC clients running the Macintosh Client Kit
1.0 trying to connect to the NT NSR 4.3 server.

When she tries to bring up NSR on the MAC it complains that there has
been an error - MAC could not look up address of the host file.
I would think that the MAC could not ping to the NT or the NT could not
ping to the MAC would cause this problem (I tried to do my detective work
on the phone so no one would have to guess), but each could ping to
each other. I do not no Macintosh, so I am limited to what to ask here.
Do you have access to a Mac running NSR that can connect to NT ? If so,
is there any special settings that have to be made.

The customer tried calling Legato, but when they found out she is
running NSR on an Alpha, then they say it is our problem, and would not
help anymore. If we can not resolve this quickly, she will go to
Legato, and buy the Intel version of NSR for NT and get her support
    from them.

a suggestion to get the new MAC clientkit. At the least, there is a new
one out there, and they need to use that - Legato will tell them
 that first thing.

Yes, we have a MAC that can connect to NT, and they are running NetWorker.
I'll check with the current owner, and let you know the results.

Ok, I'm looking into it. In the meantime it would be helpful to get
all the relevant information including operating system version on the
MAC, and most importantly as close of verbatim error output as is
humanly possible.

Ed,

The MAC client evidently comes configured to use nsrhost as the default
server. In order to make this work the customer may need a hosts file
in their system folder with an entry for nsrhost. I can get an example
of this to you if you want.

I just completed a scheduled backup of a Mac running V1.1 of the
Mac client software, to an NT-Alpha server. It went just fine outside
of a couple of minor messages about things like unsynchronized clocks.

If you need help working on the configuration after the customer has
upgraded the client to 1.1, let me know.

    Kevin, Rich,

The problem was the nsrhost file. They edited this to reflect the
server and all was fine. Thanks for checking though. It's good to know
there is a MAC up there.
