389.0. "SAP/BACKINT: how to choose date for recover?" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Olivier Decroupette) Fri Feb 07 1997 02:59

Hi,

I installed the new SAP BACKINT v1.1 interface for NSR & SAP R/3.
When using the brrestore utility (from SAP) to do a full restore
of the database, NSR prompt you in nwadmin to insert the right tape.
But what if you don't want to use the last backup ? How could you
specify the backup date to use ? (in place of the previously used
SAP LABEL).

Thanks a lot.

Sorry for this, it's the first time I use the notes. You could replace it by :

BACKINT : choose save sets date ?

SAP drives the restore, and does it for good reasons... NetWorker is merely
the tape storage engine for SAP. Since SAP drove the saves of your
database, to restore it, it knows what it needs, and when. Please do not try
to second guess the SAP engine without contacting SAP for correct ways to go
about this. Your database is at risk.

From your remark "NSR prompt you in nwadmin to insert the right tape", I'm
assuming you DO NOT have a jukebox, and the data is across several tapes.
SAP is requesting save sets of timestamps in a particular order to recover
the database, and those requests are sent to NetWorker, which then asks for
a particular tape based upon the NetWorker index entry.

This is where a Jukebox makes things lots easier since it auto-loads the tape
 needed.

I searched the code for "BACKINT : choose save sets date ?" and find no such
thing... please provide either exact messages, or more details around what
 you are trying to do.

thanks

Hi,

I know that life would be easier with a loader but ... that's
another story.

What I was trying to do is a restore either partial either full of
our SAP database. For this I simulated a "crash" by removing a
tablespace. Then use first sapdba (if possible) or brrestore. The
utility find the missing file and try to find a valid backup with it.
But it didn't find one so the restore is impossible. But if I use
nwrecover there is no problem. All backups are on the same tape (for
the moment).

Thanks.

389.4sounds like a bug to me, but...DECWET::EVANSBe a Point Of Light!Mon Feb 10 1997 09:5116
please delete the /tmp/backint.log and/or the /nsr/logs/backint.log
file(s), and re-run your recover requests...

please send the resultant backint.log file(s) to DECWET::DMO_SUPPORT
I'd very much like to look at them and see what might be going on to cause
 this behaviour.

You probably will need to contact SAP, but before doing that
I'd like to give you info about backint to give to them. Right now, I suspect
 sapdba/brrestore...

Oh, and please include info from recover/nwrestore that shows me what you
found that shows you the saves are all on the tape (and ??? is not
 finding them)

thanks!
