376.0. "Migration from servers: Solaris --> Digital Unix" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Avi Koski) Mon Feb 03 1997 09:13

Hi,

One of our customers is working in a configuration that includes:

Server: Solaris
------
Clients: SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, SGI, Novel 3.11/3.12/4.0
-------

All the software & licensec are supplied by LEGATO.

Customer's questions:
--------------------
1. Is it possible to replace only the server with an AlphaServer, running
Digital Unix & decnsr from Digital ?

The demand is to KEEP the Database already built by Solaris (/nsr)
and to move it to Digital Unix.

Can the clients, in this case remain with the same software & licenses,
or should they be replaced with decnsr clients & licenses ?

2. Which revisions of decnsr are equivalent to Legato's versions 4.2.4, 4.2.5,
4.3 ?

3. If the customers has built a Database with Letato's version, not yet
implemented
on Digital Unix (decnsr) - can he continue working after replacing the
server
with decnsr and use /nsr as it is (without any conversion) ?

Thanks in advance,
Avi Koski

There is no Digital UNIX server based on 4.2.4, 4.2.5 or 4.3. One of the
next Digital UNIX servers will be based on 4.2.7.

There should be no UNIX server of any kind based on 4.3, that is an NT release.
We have an NSR server for NT Alpha that is 4.3 based and we use that as the
version number.

Licenses are put on the server except in a handful of cases, they would have
to buy LMF PAKs from Digital to license things on Digital UNIX. Check out the
SPD for order numbers and support information.

I would not move a database 'as is'. I'm sure there will be many people to
warn of the potential problems inherent in doing that.

There is a procedure in the manuals which describes how to move
indexes from one server to another. You should use this.
There are differences in the on-disk format of the databases, but
they are taken care of by these procedures.

You *need* a new set of licenses. NetWorker for Digital UNIX
uses LMF PAKs issued by Digital instead of the enablers issued by
  Legato for Solaris.

Before you ask, there is no trade-in program.

Which Legato's version is most compatible to decnsr V4.2B ?

Which decnsr version will be most compatible to Legato's 4.2.7 ?

Thanks,
Avi

DECnsr was the ultrix product.

NetWorker V4.2B for Digital UNIX started out as 4.2.1 with loads of
changes put into it.

NetWorker V4.3 & V4.4 for Digital UNIX should be based on 4.2.7.
You will need Digital UNIX V4.0A or higher.

4.3 & 4.4 are future products. Contact Craig (DECWET::) Huber
for details on release dates, etc.

I looked through the table of contents for the NW DU Admin, Addendum
and Unix User guides, but didn't see this topic. Where should I be
    looking?

    Thanks!

Legato Bulletin 121 contains useful information on moving Networker servers.
When moving to a Digital Networker server just substitute setld for nsr_ize,
and lmf for enablers and everything should work.
