375.0. "NSR v3.1a expression ploblem?" by TKTVFS::KOZASA (Japan/MCS/Tsukuba Hiroshi.Kozasa) Mon Feb 03 1997 05:25

Dear, all

Our customer upgrade NSR from 3.0 to 3.1A.
Our customer used NSR v3.0 about two years ago , the ohter day we experience
"Index Size Limitation (2GB)". So we upgraded DECNSR .

(Our customer environment)
DEC OSF/1 V3.0A
DECNSR    V3.1A    (patch installed nsrv31a-001,002,003,004,005,006)

about version up for v3.1a
succeed to nsr.res nsrjb.res
index convertion "nsrcf -F " works fine.

(problem)
After the full backup operation done DECNSR says each filesystem size
become 41XX MB .
DECNSR v3.0 has not this expression.  ( same  `df -k` )
The customer worry about this full backup operation.
I inquire into some logfile ( /var/nsr/logs) , no error message found.
And i inquire into "volumes" that written by this ful backup operation ,
it seems good size our expectancy.
Personally, this problem is only expression , but i want to *fix* this
problem.

Thanks, Hiroshi

(output `df -k`)

My first question is this:

If you were upgrading the customer, why not bring them up to
a current kit? 3.1A is still quite old, and your chances of getting
a patch to it are fairly miniscule.

Now, as to the filesystems being all reported to be "41XX MB" in size,
are you referring to the saveset size?

If so, do you see savesets named like:
/h01
/h01<1>
/h01<2>

These are called "continuation savesets", and are simply the case that
NetWorker breaks the large savesets into multiple smaller savesets
to make its internal management easier. Operationally, you should
see no difference.

Thank you for your advice.

Our customer used osf/1 v3.0a.
                        ~~~~~~
So, i read some interesting installation guide for DECNSR each version.
I decided on upgrading to 3.1A(DECNSR)
>Now, as to the filesystems being all reported to be "41XX MB" in size,
>are you referring to the saveset size?
No, i don't think so personally.
I believe our full backup opration completd successfully.
But the customer has a suspision the backup filesystem being all reported to
be "41XX MB" in size . This size is not an actual size .
In short , the customer watch the reporting mail from DECNSR , the reporting
mail say "41XX MB" .
>If so, do you see savesets named like:
You are right . I think so.
My question
(1) Why not reporting actual total amount size as DECNSR V3.0 ?
(2) Is there a possibility that we mistake some setting ?
(3) Any idea???
I appreciate your kind comment.
Without seeing the exact message, it is very difficult to guess
what is going on in detail, and if I did answer, it would only be that:
a guess.
The best way to proceed is a two-pronged approach:
1) Have your customer attempt some test-restorations to gain confidence
	that the data that they need is really getting backed up.  This
	is a very good idea in any case, to practice the recovery BEFORE
	it is an emergency!
2) Try to send the exact mail message (the entire message) to me, or post
	it here so that I can better understand what they are seeing.
My suspicion is that 3.1A is simply doing a more complete job of handling
large savesets than prior releases did, and that has some cosmetic effects.
Seeing the exact mail message will let me determine that.
