374.0. "DECnsr restoring advfs to alpha client" by RHETT::LAROSE () Sun Feb 02 1997 11:34
Though this configuration is certainly not recommended, and probably
not supported, the following command worked and is logged here for
anyone who might need to do this.
(The customer knows they should be upgraded from DECnsr ULTRIX to
Digital UNIX NSR)
Configuration:
ULTRIX DECnsr V2.1A server (name = mips1)
(5000/260, lots of memory and swap and a good network)
Digital UNIX NSR Client (name = alpha1)
(NSR version unknown, probably V3.X, Digital is UNIX V3.2G)
(Note: this would not have worked if Digital UNIX was V4.x,
due to advfs incompatibility)
- alpha1 backs up advfs filesystem to mips1
- later, advfs /usr filesystem needs restoring from mips1 to alpha1.
1) From alpha1, command line recover works to recover some files.
But most files do not recover. No error, but files show up as 0
length.
2) The command that worked to pull the complete /usr filesystem from
mips1 to alpha1 and relocate to /vision:
.from alpha1 issue this command:
#rsh mips1 -v /bin/scanner -s <ssid of /usr> /dev/nrmt1h | \
/usr/bin/uasm -rv -m /usr=/vision
.the scanner command is reading tape on mips1
.data stream goes across the pipe
.the uasm command on alpha1 recovers /usr data to /vision
./vision is a 'big enough' local advfs mount point
.if mips1 DECnsr backed up good data, then it should be recovered
at this point
We have had a customer who has done this twice on two separate
filesystems and this is the only method that recovered the data.
Note: - an alternate method could be to load single server nsr onto
the UNIX NSR client and scan data in.
- DECnsr ULTRIX should be upgraded immediately to Digital UNIX
NSR.
