350.0. "Backup of NFS files" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Richard Allen) Mon Jan 27 1997 01:12

I have a client using POLYCENTER NSR to backup an Alpha 600 running UNIX V3.2.
Can he also backup remotely mounted NFS files?

Also, if he upgrades to 4.2 can he backup SGI and SUN NFS files?

Finally, are there ANY (even minor) differences between Legato and DIGITAL
NSR?
I believe they are the same product which DIGITAL resells but I'd like
confirmation.

Many thanks for your time!

Richard

This is NOT recommended. You will be moving the files across the net
TWICE just to save $160 (US). It's not worth it and we don't support
    it.

> Also, if he upgrades to 4.2 can he backup SGI and SUN NFS files?

    See previous answer.

> Finally, are there ANY (even minor) differences between Legato and DIGITAL
> NSR?

Yes. We don't always ship the same version number as Legato and lag
their release by 3-6 months. We have many specific features for
Digital UNIX such as AdvFS, Digital devices and DU cluster support and
    Save Set Consolidation.

Very similar (in most respects) but not the same.

I can understand the stated reason (moving the data twice) why backin
gup NFS-served disks is a bad idea. I can imagine another: if the
NFS-served disks isn't reachable, for whatever, reason, this would have
a bad effect on NetWorker. The exact effect I'm not sure of; could
    anyone comment?

I may use this as ammunition to explain why we won't do backups in this
    fashion to our users.

    Thanks!

NetWorker tries to contact a hung NFS mount point, and after 33 minutes
(or whatever it has been set to) NetWorker aborts, and goes to the next
 client.

People consider this NFS thing a panacea, since it's free/cheap, but in reality
buying $1500 for *all* the clients of that type (Unix, usually) is all it
takes, plus $160/client license (loaded on the NetWorker Server, of course).

Most companies waste more money than that just calling us trying to figure out
how to save $160 (eg, why can't I back up my NFS mount point...)
