haven't upgraded...
Thanks,

| What functionality will the OpenVMS client include? I'm very
interested in:
o save and restore
o archiving
o HSM
Thanks!

We consider older OpenVMS versions such as 5.5-2 as
as serious goal. Only time will tell if it really works.
R.E. .5
Don't expect a full UNIX like client. The target is a basic
backup product. Other features would only be added if there
is significant market demand (mucho money to pay for it).

Thanks. So the first OpenVMS client will include backup and restore
support, but not archiving or HSM, right?
I think both of the Windows NT (Intel and Alpha) clients support
archiving; is this true?
Thanks!

237.8 | | DECWET::KOWALSKI | Time's not for saving | Fri Mar 14 1997 10:58 | 8 |
| Windows NT clients only perform PC Archiving, not
UNIX Archiving. Refer to the doc set for differentiation.
The plan is for the VMS client to perform save
and recover from a command line interface. Nothing
more, nothing less.

Thanks for the detail. Of course, I'd really like to have the
NetWorker x Windows GUI as seen on Digital UNIX ported to OpenVMS. But
I'll certainly take the command line for now. I really want to use
just one product to handle our backups, and I'd much prefer NetWorker.
I hope you're planning on writing a GUI interface soon. Cast your eye
over my experiencies with the command line interface in 240.* to see
why.
Thanks

Having absolutely nothing to do with VMS anything and NSR, I can
honestly say... Terry, you crack me up. How many people do you
think we have here?

| Hi
> How many people do you think we have here?
No idea. Out of curiosity, how many? Probably (just like in my group)
not enough to do what needs to be done as quickly as your customers
expect it.
> Having absolutely nothing to do with VMS anything and NSR, I can

The sarcasm I can follow; the first part leaves me in the dust. What's
your point?
The reason I say these things are to provide Voice of the Customer
feedback, which every development group needs. And I speak as one
bullish about your product, by the by. If I offend or irritate, please
don't take it that way. Field tests, bug reports, ocassional detailed
troubleshooting (the Windows NT restore work for instance) and VoC are
the ways that I make NetWorker better for both you and me.

| A VMS client GUI is definitely on our list of future enhancements,
but as stated in earlier replies, the first version will be command-
line backup and restore only.
We are listening, so keep those cards and letters coming!

There are about ~10 engineers for NSR (who
also do some support & most of the testing) &
a few for support. Recently I think there
were 6 active project leads at the same time.
I do not know anything about the VMS schedules
(and thus did not want to indicate that I
knew anything) but your use of the word 'soon'
was humorous. Don't stop giving input, you
rightly give information about the desirability
of various features. The speed at which they
get incorporated is another thing.
