| I looked at the Legato compatibility page (referenced in 17.) and could not
find what I was looking for, perhaps I am a little dense today? Also a search
of titles in this notes file didn't uncover it for me either although this
thread touches on it (so I hope Terry doesn't mind be hitching on here?).
I was looking for a matrix of the lowest level client revision supported by a
given server revision?
To further explain, I have several OSF/1 V2.x clients using nsr client to
backup to a nsr V3.0 server (on D.U. V2.0). Also among the clients are
several Ultrix MIPS boxes running V4.3 using nsr client to the same nsr server
as above. The clients must stay at this version (be kind to my blood pressure
and don't ask :-)) at least for now.
I would like to build a modern nsr server, running the V4.2b kit, but may have
to choose a lower version of nsr server version that is compatible with the
nsr client bits that exist on these more mature systems. I was looking for
this client to server version matrix.
thanks

The general rule of thumb is that old clients can backup to newer servers
but old clients can't take advantage of features of the newer servers and
this could bite you in many ways. E.g. old clients don't know what pools
are, etc...

There is no fully checked matrix which you are asking for. However getting
those old mips boxes to backup to a recently released server should not be
a problem on the server side, might be a setup issue on the client side.
E.g. I backup up old mips systems to NT 4.3 servers.... I thought the mips
boxes were running the last client code released from Legato but I'll have
to check.

| just ran a test... set up V4.2B server with client resource for
an Ultrix client. Unix Std directives, regular schedule, Default group.
on client, insured nsrexecd was running (ps, when "/usr/bin/nsrexecd" is
all you see, then *any* server can connect, which is good in my case)
clicked APPLY, and voila, frosty was a client.
clicked Group Control button, and fired up a save of everything. It's still
cooking, but it's working.
frosty is Ultrix V4.3, NSR on frosty comes from BRXSOAKIT300 or something
way back like that. No one creates these kits anymore (Legato or Digital),
so hang on to those binaries!
Good Luck.
