316.0. "Excursion right-button select text problem" by STKHLM::IVAN () Tue May 27 1997 07:28

    We have a customer in Sweden, who complains that an useful Excursion 1.X
    (and OVMS DecWindows/Motif workstation) behaviour has changed both in
    Excursion V2.X and V3.0. We beleive we could test the customer's scenario
    in-house.

    On an Excursion V1.X or on an OVMS DecWindows/Motif workstation when
    selecting a text in a non-active window by pressing the right mouse button,
    the text is copyied in the the buffer (and can be pasted in another
    window by releasing the right button) without the non-active "source"
    window to become active. On an Excursion V2.X and V3.0 workstation as
    soon, as the right mouse button is pressed, the non-active window becomes
    active. The "target" window for the paste operation must be first ex-
    plicitely reselected as the active window before pasting in it - it is
    not possible to simply release the righ button over it for pasting the
    buffer. This change is according to the customer very bothering for com-
    panies, having both OVMS and PC X-windows workstations.

    I wonder if we have some reasons and explanations for this change.

    Regards,

    Ivan Ivanov,
    MCS Sweden

    Your not expecting anything to be done about this are you?

    Just a reason, right?

are they using the built-in window manager or MWM?

    Starting with 2.0, the way eXcursion emulated 3 buttons on a 2 button
    mouse changed. 1.x uses a keyboard modifier along with the right mouse
    button to generate the MB3 event. And the right mouse button by itself
    equals MB2. By default 2.0 and higher map the right mouse button to
    MB3 and use chording (pressing both buttons at the same time) to
    generate MB2. MB2 is what's used for the quick paste.

    So you can either use the chording to generate MB2 - which would
    probably make it hard to use the quick paste, or you can go into the
    eXcursion 2.1 or 3.0 control panel and change 2 button mouse behavior.
    By default, the Emulate MB2 radio button is pressed. Just change to
    MB3 and then the right mouse button will again generate the MB2 event.

316.4Built-in Window Manager is usedSTKHLM::IVANTue May 27 1997 10:4514
    Re. .1
    If there are no special reasons for the change, the customer would like
    the original behaviour (which is consistent with our traditional X
    platforms), to be restored.

    Re. .2
    The customer is using the built-in window manager.

    Thanks for the immediate respons!

316.5Still active window changeSTKHLM::IVANTue May 27 1997 11:2111
    Re. .3
    Yes, the button emulation can be configured, but still pressing the right
    button results in selecting the window as active window. Releasing
    the button after text selection pastes the text in the new active
    window and not in the one, which was active before the text selection
    (as it was in Excursion V1.X and is on Vax/Alha/Unix stations).

    Okay, I follow you now.

    If the customer feels this is a bug, IPMT or QAR it. There is no way
    to configure the desired behavior from the control panel. Though I
    expect it will have to be treated as a request for new functionality.
    The local window manager was never offered as a replacement for mwm and
    the funtionalities of the 2 have always differed in one way or another.

    mwm running under eXcursion does provide the behavior your customer
    expects. It should probably be offered to the customer as a workaround.
    (If the customer is running Windows NT, there is a NT version of mwm
    that can be run in place of the VMS or Unix version.)
