284.0. "License requestor is too slow" by WOTVAX::SHARKEYA (LoginN - even makes the coffee@) Thu May 08 1997 06:40

    Install PW32 on a Win95 system. The system is set to get the user
    validated from a server (VAX with PW 5.0E ECO1).

    When the system is first rebooted - the username/password/domain box
    comes up long before the license requestor has finished. So, the logon
    is refused.

    This did not happen with PW95 v1.0a.

    This is serious - what can we do ?

wait for Loginn to make the coffee, then get a cup while your PC is
booting?

284.2Is this why ?WOTVAX::oloras7.olo.dec.com::SharkeyaWinPass - now freeThu May 08 1997 11:5417
Who mentioned LOGINN ? This is windows95 - far superior (huh?).

Anyway, I think the issue is because:

In PW32, the license requester stuff gets loaded in the 'runservices' entry
of the registry. Previously, it was loaded in SYSTEM.INI.

If you are being validated by the network, then there is a delay while the
system works out that it can get some/any network before it loads the stuff
thats in SYSTEM.DAT.

in the old days, SYSTEM.INI (even under W95) got its stuff loaded and
executed quickly, so there was no problem.

Am I close ? If so, can we have the old way back please ?

Very close.... close enough for discussion.

The simple answer is... no.

284.4Is it fixed in 7.0a ?WOTVAX::oloras11.olo.dec.com::SharkeyaWinPass - now freeMon May 12 1997 05:4613
OK - lets discuss.

I have 7.0a on my laptop and when THAT requests a license, the username
prompt does not come up till its finished. However, my laptop does not do a
network validation.

So, is it fixed in 7.0a ? I do not have a 7.0a kit to try (I used one of
yours to install - remember?) - can I 'borrow' a kit from LANMGR to try?

	No. No change has been made in this area.
