280.0. "MS Winsock2 RC1 problem with DECnet/Excursion" by STKHLM::IVAN () Wed May 07 1997 15:27
There is a new Beta Release Candidate 1 of MS Winsock2 (WS295RC1.EXE,
01-MAY 1997, 1284 KB) on the MS FTP server, mentioned in note # 252
(ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winsock/winsock2). After installing the
software, following the documentation on the same location and running
PWS2INST.EXE, WSAENUM.EXE reports the three DECnet entries, exactly as
specified in note # 252. DLOOPST.EXE runs correctly and loops and the
VT320 emulator runs over DECnet. Installing Excursion V3.0 (on Swedish
language W95) gives just before start copying the Excusion files from
the CD to the hard disk error message
Error in COMMON\LIST1.C, line 1018, please report to Microsoft ,
but the installation continues and finishes with success message.
After configuring an X terminal application over DECnet to a VMS host
(with PCX$SERVER object configured) and running it from the Excursion
Control Panel, an error message claims that DECnet is not installed on
the local side and recommends use of another transport (while NCP LOOP
and VT320 CTERM session to the same VMS host work problem-free).
Issuing on the host side the command
$ CREATE/TERMINAL/DETACH/DISPLAY=NODENAME::0
results in opening terminal window on the W95/Excursion side over
DECnet (the host has no TCP/IP stack). Unfortunately at this customer
site there was no single TCP/IP host, running X client, so I was not
able to check if Excursion and the new Winsock2 were working properly
over TCP/IP.
I wonder if Engineering has tested the new RC1 MS Winsock2 with PW32
and Excursion V3.0 over DECnet? What might be wrong in my case?
With thanks in advance,
Ivan Ivanov, MCS, Sweden

Since you were able to run an X application using DECnet, it appears that
the problems may not be caused by Winsock2. There may be some configuration
problem on the eXcursion side causing the "DECnet is not installed..." message.
Could you turn on logging from the eXcursion control panel and see if there
is any more information to help track this one down.
I wonder if Engineering has tested the new RC1 MS Winsock2 with PW32

We have successfully run eXcursion on Win95 with winsock2 and have encountered
no problems.

I haven't seen this error on installation before - I'm not sure what problems
this may cause. I'll look into this some more.

| Just for another data point. I've run this sucessfully as well. (On US
Win95. Is that winsock 2 kit just for US W95?)
As an aside... .0 mentions that a customer is involved. Should we be
offering this to customers? Seems like a bad idea until MS goes gold
with Winsock 2.
