259.0. "App. icons disappear after installing PW32" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Claus Nielsen) Tue Apr 29 1997 12:08

After installing PW32 on Windows 95 application-icons on PATHWORKS server
share disappears.
The scenario is as follows:
Client:
Windows 95 with Netbeui as the only protocol.
Server: PATHWORKS 5.0E & 5.0E ECO1
The client is configured to log on to the LM domain on the PW server.
No problems yet!
When making an UNC command from the Start->Run (Eg. \\SERVER\PCCOMMON) the
application icons displays ok. (WINWORD.EXE etc.)

Install the PW32 kit with LAT,VT320 and the LM license agent.
Problem:
The applicatuion icons on the share on the PW server disappears.
It only shows the standard application icon.

Any Clues !

259.1One possibility...VMSNET::P_NUNEZTue Apr 29 1997 14:5115
    Yep. I think what you're seeing is a byproduct of the issue involving
    cpu "consumption" by one of the PW32 components (I think it's the
    license transponder).

    From what I understand, the displaying of the actual app icon is
    determined based on some performance metric the client (Win95)
    calculates. Exceed that metric and it doesn't try to read the icon
    info stored in the image (this may not be exactly correct, but it's
    close)...

    Try (1) looking in the conference for issues around 100% cpu activity
    and then try removing that component (only). Then see if the old
    behavior returns (please post the results here)...

Paul!

I don't quite follow ..
Search where? and what components should be removed if I did search for it
and in deed found it.
But I haven't found it yet ....

259.43rd try's a charm?VMSNET::P_NUNEZTue Apr 29 1997 18:0535

    Sorry Claus,

    Let me try again (my other reply isn't 2 good ;o).

    >From what I understand, the displaying of the actual app icon is
    >determined based on some performance metric the client (Win95)
    >calculates. Exceed that metric and it doesn't try to read the icon
    >info stored in the image (this may not be exactly correct, but it's
    >close)...

    First the problem: Win95 used to display the correct icon because
    Win95 took the time to read the icon info in the image. Now Win95
    isn't doing that. FWIU (From What I Understand ;o), Win95doesn't take
    the time to read the image because it believes performance is already
    bad enough.

    So that leads me to my "What could cause the performance hit?" Which
    is why I mentioned:

    >Try (1) looking in the conference for issues around 100% cpu activity
    >and then try removing that component (only). Then see if the old
    >behavior returns (please post the results here)...

    But it should say try looking in "this" conference (PATHWORKS32) for
    the issue regarding one of the PW32 components consuming (idle) cpu
    time. Perhaps, because Win95 thinks the CPU is 100% busy, Win95 isn't
    reading the image file to get the icon info.

    And, if my theory is correct, the previous (good?) behavior should
    return by removing (for testing only ;o) the quilty PW32 component.

    Better?

259.5License Requester..NNTPD::"[email protected]"Claus NielsenThu May 01 1997 06:2173
License requester.

I tried the following setup:
The test for showing the icons was done by a
start->run->\\server\pccommon in Windows 95.
When running with license requester the client requested a PWLMDOSCC06.00 and
nothing else.
When running without license requester PWLMVMSCU05.00 was used.
Then PATHWORKS Client components used is the PW32 kit.

It seems like that the license requester/transponder is the problem?
