Hello !! Customer installed PW32 on a Compaq Proliant 5000 with 2 CPU's running NT4.0 Server with SP1 Customer installed only the DECnet components, Netbeui was installed before PW32 was installed as mentioned in the releasenotes. Directly after the installation everything looked ok, clients could connect to the server. The server is only used as a file server. But when the users started to connect to the system during the day and the system got loaded the CPU went up to 100% and stoped responding over DECnet, Netbeui and TCP-IP. The system was hanging. In the Event log the following was logged. "DEC Ndis, in DLL PERSCTRS.DLL, Failed. Will Not be available" After deinstalling PW32 the system worked again, and after reinstalling PW32 the same thing happend, CPU 100%. I have read all the notes about 100% cpu, but in those notes the systems seem to still work even when the CPU shows 100%. But this system, the customer says it stops responding. I know that en V4.1B there was a bug when useing a system with 2 CPU's and there was a patch for that as well Hopefully this is not introduced again. Anyone ?? Per Torlind / PATHWORKS support, Sweden

241.1 | Possibly solved, file IPMT | SPELNK::curless | Tue Apr 22 1997 11:52 | 25
The error message you are seeing about the Performance counters has nothing to do with the problem (invalid reference in an .INF file) The other issue will require an IPMT to be filed, please provide 1) A list of all other software running on the SMP system 2) Type and speed of processors 3) A FULL description of the problem, including a display of the counters, etc. from ncp (line,circuit,exec) Might want to load service pack 2 from January (not december). Microsoft fixed a heap of things in that service pack... but the December one crashes machines.... Also, we have a known issue with idle links being generated on NT servers if there are NT 3.51 members in the domain running PATHWORKS v4.1b, this has been solved for v7.0a. (and might be related) As for the SMP problems with v4.1b... the DECnet stack is a totally different architecture, designed for SMP... unlike v4.1b which was dragged kicking and screaming (or is that hanging) into an smp world. 241.2 | PW32 Hangs ALPHA SMP machine | ALFSS2::OLSEN_G | Real Men Go Wireless! | Tue May 06 1997 13:32 | 14 |
I have a customer with this same problem... He applied the January Service Pack AND a Hot Fix from microsoft to address Alpha SMP problems! However, he can't even boot the machine. It just hangs during boot. No error, just hang. He has to warm boot but it never gets past the hang. Has this been reported? Any cure? CLD? Thanks, Gary Olsen Atlanta CSC

re: 241.2 gary, is the customer you refer to the same one as the IPMT case you escalated? (cfs.51007/excel industries) the latest update from that escalation says that field service found the system at an old rev of the firmware. Upgraded from 4.3 to 4.7 and the hang problem went away. this may help others..... vivianne |
