234.0. "License Problems " by VMSNET::P_NUNEZ () Wed Apr 16 1997 10:20

We've a customer running WNT V4.0 (Dell GX Pro Pentium 200) and having
problems with the PW32 licensing agent. Seems it's not even attempting
    to request a license.

We run pnlcfg and it gets a license, but then when he tries to connect,
he gets the "No more connections..." error, server logs "No server
license.. - access denied". We look at the PW event log on the NT
client - no "Presenting license ..." message.

He can deinstall the PW32 license agent and install the PATHWORKS v4.1b
license bits and have no problems.

The problem only occurs on this one NT client; other NT clients aren't
    having the problem.

    Ideas?

We've been battling this one for a few weeks now (it's a "boss's" PC),
had the local office on-site but they couldn't fix it, so we're close
to IPMT'ing (will have sniffer traces).

Paul,

You might like to tell us some more about the problem, like what
licenses are you requesting and possibly adding the pathworks event
log to the end of your note.

I have recently seen a situation where the license requestor would
only request one license at a time. So just try to get the
PWLMWNTCC04.01 by its self. I have not followed this up at the
moment.

A good first step is to ask the customer to email a copy of
the PATHWORKS Event Log. That will indicate the versions
of the components being run, the order in which they are run
	and any problems encountered.

I know, not much to go by. I got dragged into the middle of it...

Anyway, here's what I know (traces and logs on the way):

pw/nt v4.1b kit License bits (only) installed
Installed pw32 - it deleted the 4.1b license setup, installed
    		DECnet/LAT/VT320/License Agent.
Rebooted and got connected; but this was because he was still in
the pwrk$license_r cache (when 4.1b bits were installed)/
24-hours later, he can't connect (no more connections...)
Reboot client; doesn't request a license; log shows no evidence of
license being requested, yet license service is started
Run pnlcfg, make a mod to screen, it requests and obtains license.
Try to connect - can't (no more connections)
Check event log - no "presenting license" messages

De-install pw32, install 4.1b license bits, and all's fine again.

5 other NT 4.0 clients (same hardware/network inteface) upgraded
    	w/o a hitch.

We've tried some variations on the above - ie, restart the server to
get the client out of the license registrar cache. No luck.
