150.0. "winsock2 date ??" by PCSERV::PTORLIND () Sun Mar 09 1997 12:44

    Hi !!

    Could anyone tell when winsock2 from MS will be provided so eXcursion
    will run over DECnet in Windows95.

    I know this is a Microsoft issue but hopefully one of you guys has
    a date. Or ??

    Need something to tell a few customers who has been waiting for the new
    eXcursion V3 to be able to run it over DECnet and now they still can't.
    Not too many are very happy about this situation that has been going on
    for a while now, they don't see it as a Microsoft problem. They more
    see it as we can't even deliver our own products to run over our own
    protocol.

    These are customers feelings, not mine !!!!!

    Anyone ??

We're all just going to have to hang tough until it ships. There is no
other solution, short of recoding eXcursion's socket code.

(Who also must talk with customers on the subject and who hopes that the
good explanation in the release notes will help calm them down. ;-)

Current info is:

Soon... hopefully before the end of the quarter.

That is from development @ Microsoft. So yes, we are still waiting on
Microsoft for final bits. The good news is that it appears the current
"final" components are functional with PW32 with no changes...

    Jeff, et al, feel free to say "don't do that" but I thought I'd ask
    just the same.

    Given that a PATHWORKS 32 customer has beta16.zip, what's required
    from that zip to make PATHWORKS 32 Winsock 2 bit work? I recall that
    early on in the Hummingbird development, there was a rather ugly
    installation procedure for the Winsock 2 installation. Can this be
    made to work?

    i'll be one of the 'et all' and say

    		don't do that!!

    there is no clean way from Microsoft to de-install deta16.

Sure there is ,... FORMAT the hard disk!
Seriously, that is damn near the only way to un-install beta16.

    Thanks to both of you. That ought to scare him away. ;-)

150.8No use for DECnet on a PCSTAR::JACOBIPaul A. Jacobi - OpenVMS DevelopmentFri Mar 14 1997 11:289
    Why run eXcursion over DECnet? It runs just fine over TCP/IP!

    The most popular PC network application is Netscape, which runs over
    TCP/IP. Why use DECnet when TCP/IP is all you really need on a PC?

    Why DECnet?

    I talk to a fair number of customers who are VMS/DECnet only shops.
    They're still out there. Some are simply frightened of TCP/IP. Some
    don't want or need to invest the money to buy UCX or equivalent. Some
    don't want to invest the time in setting up and administering another
    protocol. Some have legacy applications that depend upon DECnet.
    Those who have no plans to hook up to the internet have no compelling
    reason to switch to TCP/IP.

    I'm not DECnet's biggest fan, but I know there are still users out
    there. (I also know that eXcursion's lack of DECnet support on Win95
    has angered some, and has driven others to adopt TCP/IP sooner than
    they'd planned.)

150.10how will it be distributed??VMSNET::M_SMITHWed Mar 26 1997 16:535
    When the winsock2 kit is ready, how will it be distributed to DEC PW 32
    customers?
