I received a note this morning that ask Digital folks to go check their ELF V3
entries and clean them up. A fair enough request. I've been trying to
accomplish
something in that direction for about 1/2 hour now, to no avail. It does point
out a major issue wiyth our Electronic systems. They are not easy to use, not
intuitive at all and generally less useful or friendly than they will need to
be
to be successful.
First the Internet page www-elf.bb.dec.com has a search field on it that
returns nothing but a "server down or unreachable" message, when I
try to use it. Not encouraging for a mission important (but admittedly not
critical)application. Secondly, I downloaded the WinELF V2.5 client and
installed it. All I get is a "sub or function not defined" error message box
when trying to use it pointed at a VTX server or can't contact LDAP Server
when pointed at X.500. Not very helpful. Before you respond that everything
anyone needs to know is in some Read Me file somewhere, my point is that this
stuff has to be much more simple to use than this, in order to be successful.
I'm not a guru at this stuff, but I'm no novice either. This stuff is more
painful than it needs to be.
FYI - I'm trying to run this on my home office system - Pentium Pro with
NT V4.0,w/SP2. I have Teamlinks V2.7 EFT installed and it works fine,
PWconference works also and VTXWIN, but WINELF doesn't work. I'm dialed in
to my ISP and using AV Tunnel 97 T2.0 (Build 71). Elf server is pointed at
www-elf.bb.dec.com port 3883. So what am I doing wrong?

Not that is is related to your WinELF problem, but TeamLinks V2.7 SSB has
been available since last September (!) - in fact, V3.0 is going to field
test 2 shortly. Just fyi....
