1985.0. "Hardware recommendation for AFW for 12000 www request per hour ?" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Arthur Lin) Tue Jun 03 1997 22:21

I am planing for a AFW upgrade case. The customer site has a large
network - about 6000 nodes inside. Based on the customer's statistics,
there are 12000 www requests per hour, i.e. the www proxy probably need
to serve 1000 requests (or more) concurrently. Previously, the customer
use a Alpha Workstation 4/266 as the firewall host, but it could only
serve at most 400 www requests concurrently and then the CPU became busy
all the time (0 idle). Now,for the upgrade case, the customer need us
to recommend a qualified hardware box to meet their heavy network traffic
requirement. We try to propose the Alpha Server 4000 series, but has no
confidence for such proposal. Any suggestion ?

I'm confused... 12,000 www requests per hour? really?

Because that is less than 4 requests per second. Any Webserver can hack that.
Even my 486/75 lappy running MS Personal Webserver. Have I missed something?
