1918.0. "GUI won't start ?" by WOTVAX::ROONEY (Hugh Rooney) Wed Apr 16 1997 12:37
Hi,
I am trying to install the AVFU on an Alphaserver 1000A 5/333. The installation
completes sucessfully, however I cannot start the GUI. If I try to start it
from a terminal session I get a "memory fault - core dumped" message. X windows
is working fine (seems low resolution ?) and the screen background is green for
the firewall status, however the GUI will not start up !
I tried running the other netscape browser, that is supplied with Unix and it
failed also the first time, again the message was 'memory fault - core dumped'
, it seemed to fail when I accepted the licensing terms. However thereafter it
works OK, it does complain about something to do with graphics options, when I
accept this it works.
The configuration is AVFU V2.1, Digital Unix V4.0A, AS1000A 5/333, the graphics
card is a PB2GA-FB.
I have also checked the fonts issue described in 1686.9, these fonts are there,
and unlike that problem X is working.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, or any suggestions on how I might get
past this.
Many Thanks
Hugh Rooney

| The one time I had this problem, it was because the graphics card had no
on-board memory, ie: get a better graphics adapter...

| .1 is correct: get a different graphics card.
The 1000A is a server, and the reasoning is that if it's a server, it doesn't do
graphics. Therefore the graphics card shipped with it is the cheapest (i.e.
worst) possible.
Netscape requires a bunch of colours to start, and the default 1000A graphics
card can only do 16 colours. Netscape seemed to have overlooked the concept of
checking status values, so Navigator just dies horribly.
