1916.0. "AFU V2.1 evaluation kits seem to be bad" by BACHUS::ROELANDTS (Wa d'es ma da ve ne stuut) Mon Apr 14 1997 10:56

  Hello,

  Does anyone have experience with the evaluation kits located on the
  Altavista software server, more specifically with the AltaVista Firewall
  96 (for Digital Unix). A customer reported that he was not able to configure
  anything with it, I tried it and had the same problem.

  To reproduce it proceed as follows :

  1. Instal DU V4.0A (only the required subsets as listed in the Installation
     Guide - I tried also with DU V3.2C with the same results)

  2. Install the V2.1 evaluation kit

  3. After the reboot, start the DWFNetscape window, login, change the password
     the try to configure the Firewall

        ==> no way to do it, it always shows the main configuration screen

  As I didn't have the problem with the officiaol V2.1 kit, I suspect a
  problem with the evaluation kit .... anyone knows what is happening ?

  Thank you for any info/help

     Regards,

         Guy ROELANDTS

1916.1Startup script?OSL09::BJORNMYOpen but SecureTue Apr 15 1997 03:557
    At some time there was an error in one of the startup scripts that
    failed if the red interface was not configured. (This was to bring the
    red interface down until booting was completed).

    Do you get any errors during boot?

1916.2Could be broken!GALVIA::SMITHTue Apr 15 1997 05:144
    Its possible that the eval kit is broken - I'll have it checked out
    asap.

	Me, too!  Same problem!!
	DU4.0A + AVFW V2.1 eval (expires on 1-MAY-1997).

	Oh, I should have asked here sooner....
	I was struggling with it since last week.

    Hello all,

    The problem is solved, in fact you need to replace the netscape
    executable used by the firewall with an older version (by default it
    uses V3.0). I replaced :

    /usr/opt/DFW210/usr/dfws/bin/netscape

    by a V2.0 executable and all seems to work fine now

    Rgds,

    PS : solution was found via the AltaVista Firewall Forum

1916.6problem with updating version of NetscapeGALVIA::KEATINGWed Apr 16 1997 14:2415

    We recently upgraded the version of Netscape shipped
    with the V2.1 eval kits, from V2.1 to V3.

    This upgrade caused the image map problems you are seeing.

    This problem is now fixed and new eval kits are in the process
    of been added to the download area.
    I will reply to this note as soon as I receive confirmation that
    the eval kits have been updated.
    In the mean time replace the version of netscape with an
    earlier version as described in the previoius note.

Just as a matter of interest, how much testing did the new version of Netscape
get?

1916.8Plenty!GALVIA::SMITHThu Apr 17 1997 05:2618
    I understand that Netscape does a fair amount of testing through their
    early release and beta test programs. What's your point? Just to
    reinforce what Sarah said in .6, the fact is that there was a bug in
    Netscape V2 that necessitated a mod to the imagemap cgi we shipped
    with the AFWU V2.1. Netscape V3 fixes the problem and therefore
    required us to rollback the imagemap fix in latest eval kits.

    As a matter of interest however Netscape does not appear to have
    addressed the memory leak problems that we experienced in Netscape V2
    so you will continue to be inconvenienced by this with Netscape V3.
    Therefore we will continue to recommend that you run Netscape on your
    firewalls only when "managing" the installation and shut it down
    otherwise. Of course, now that remote management is available, it will
    not be necessary to login at the console anymore, so you could place
    the burden of running Netscape on another host, and avoid this causing
    problems with system resource usage on your firewall.
