1900.0. "nt 1.1 and smtp slow" by SNOFS1::snod14dgp26.gen.sno.dec.com::snofs1.sno.dec.com::stylianoua () Mon Mar 31 1997 04:02

Hi

I have installed an AFW NT 1.1 at a customer site. The only special
requirements are that the customer does not have an internal mail hub.
So, I modified all the alarms and reports so no mailing was taking place.
I did not setup AltaVista Mail that came with the package.

After installation the firewall seemed to be working fine. After a week
users starting using web, ftp and telnet. The firewall is now
is now hardly functioning at all. Telnet, ftp and web are all not fuctioning.
It seems that the firewall is being overloaded as the cpu is up very high.
I have turned caching off. After killing the smtp process the cpu dropped
to about 30%. Still the other relays are not working
properly.

After looking at the smtp logs I find this line all throughout the logs.
It seems the the firewall is mailing itself.
Can some tell me what it means and tell me if this could be causing the
problem.

Any other ideas?

Given that mail is being sent to postmaster, I'd say that mail was looping back
because the firewall can't send mail. Have you looked in the mail queue to see
what the contents of the mail is?

The answer is probably to set up an internal mail hub. You can probably find a
free one; find a spare internal system and install it there.

I installed the AFW NT1.1 and mailserver and got
the same problem. I played around with the dns
and mailserver for some time and finally got it all
working. I now need to simulate this at the customer
site. When I find out exactly what I did wrong I will
tell.

OK

So I setup the AVmail server on teh firewall for NT.
It did help a little in that the firewall can send mail etc,

BUT

The firewall sometime fails to respond totally. At times, all
services are not available and then suddenly after 6hrs of
downtime the firewall starts to work.

Questions

1. Has anyone tested service pak2 for alpha on the nt firewall
2. Has anyone setup the avmail sever on the firewall.
3. Why does the firewall manual tell you not to specify an internal
	default gateway?
