1886.1 | Top Perfomer | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | tim | Fri Mar 21 1997 07:15 | 11 |
| Look very closely at the performance chart , notice AltaVista is top
at 48 connections out performing everybody else and achieving over
60mbit/sec , outstanding.
Also in all the other tables we award top marks a lot of time.
The honourable mention for beta(in early Feb) is nice , for actual product
will be even better.

| very good - pity we didn't find out from AV first though.
And how come you still have access to our network when we can't even
contact you half the time?

| Some of us just found out on Friday.
If you have access to Sun Expert the March 1997 issue has a BRIEF
article on firewall, however, it has tables that list the features for
the 25 firewall vendors. Good reference.

| I'm just back into the company doing an Internet Security role.
Do I sense some kind of animosity?
Correct me if I'm wrong but AV hasn't been hived off as a seperate entity yet
so aren't they still *ENTITLED* to be on our network?
I have no problems talking to Tim nor anyone else at Galway - always helpful,
always friendly - I assume that will stay the same if/when they are floated.
Work together guys, does "divide and conquer" ring a bell?

1886.5 | Yeah, I am not pleased | NCMAIL::SMITHB | | Mon Mar 24 1997 11:22 | 12 |
| I receive no communication from AV except from the rare notes now from
some engineers (Smith, Keating) and occasionally from T Shine. Not nearly
enough, and *nothing* from the product management people. What is in v3.0
has been asked in some form at least 50 times in the last six months.
v3 is in beta test, has anything been posted in this notes file looking for
testers, or did I miss it?
Yes I could probably call someone in Galway, but is that the best use of their
time? I have to save those calls for problems, not new features...
Brad.

1886.6 | Agreed! | PMESD::BEABES | | Mon Mar 24 1997 11:55 | 7 |
| I whole heartily agree with Brad.
In the past there were pointers to beta kits for testing and could even get pointers to the distribution kits both
Firewall and Tunnel. Those kits without a question added value to the delivery of the consulting services. I
posted a request last week for such a pointer for the AVFW 97 and AVT 97, it is yet to be responded to.

| Well, I am right now field testing V3. I found out about it, and
signed up, and thereby got access to the kit!

Did some initing and will try this once again.
How about a pointer to the beta sign up location for both the firewall and tunnel?
It would be much appreciated.

1886.9 | | BIGUN::nessus.cao.dec.com::Mayne | A wretched hive of scum and villainy | Mon Mar 24 1997 17:30 | 17 |
| It looks like AV are just encouraging us to go and sell something else.
What advantage is there is selling an AV firewall. Last month I did a week's
consulting building a firewall with a public domain proxy server, the TIS
firewall toolkit, and a lot of expertise. Who needs AV?
They won't tell us anything, they don't offer us any favours, they offer no
encouragement at all (see 1867.2, for example). If they want to be a separate
company, that's fine by me.
I'd love to help AV along, but they do nothing to help us.
Re .4: how do you get to talk to the people that matter? How can we do the same?
I have no doubts that they are both helpful *and* friendly, but the view from
here implies otherwise.

1886.10 | We still enjoy a 'special' relationship | CHEFS::dhcp56.olo.dec.com::hattos | I'm back - as a matter of fact | Tue Mar 25 1997 08:15 | 28 |
| re .-1
Well, its all about forming relationships. I guess being in the same time
zone helps.
There are perhaps a couple of reasons that you may not get much reaction in
this conference from AV.
First off :- is this conference actually a support mechanism for AVFW
engineering. I doubt that. As an earlier note implied, they have limited time
and resource.
Secondly: AV deals with Partners, we are Partners in the same way that
external Partners are. AV have a partner support environment built on their
website; we have access to it. Every time I have posted a problem report or
request up there I have been answered in very timely fashion. (Admittedly I
didn't try the Firewall support area)
Its just a fact of life that our relationship with FW engineering has had to
change. Equally it is also a fact of life that if Raptor or TIS is the right
choice for the customer, we shouldn't decline the opportunity to do the
consultancy just because of an allegiance to AV. I hope they understand that
fact.
As I said in my previous note - work together or the vendors of Gauntlet,
FW-1, SunScreen etc etc will simply get the business.
