1830.1Yes, get the latest ServPackNETRIX::"[email protected]"Scott EstabrooksTue Mar 04 1997 08:229
Andrew,

We haven't seen any problem's in running with services pack 2, and in general,

you should always run with the latest service packs available. Is there a
particular feature that you are concered about?

Contrast this reply with the unix firewall where we
are told not to apply any patches unless they have been
checked for compatibility by AV firewall engineering.

Nonetheless, I will try it out.

1830.3Different platformsNETRIX::"[email protected]"Scott EstabrooksWed Mar 05 1997 10:2910
Andrew,

These are two very different platforms. The Unix team is able to get down
into the kernel of the OS, whereas the NT uses the standard release version.
So we are able to recommend getting the latest because it most likely will not
affect current versions of our software. In the next release of the firewall,
we will need to be a little more careful, as we implement IP spoofing etc.

    We know they're two different platforms, that's why the question was
    asked in the first place. It's great that you *can* recommend getting
    the latest SP, but I don't recall seeing that you *have* recommended
    getting the latest SP (or not). If you have, please point out where, so
    we can keep track of your recommendations as future releases come out.

    It's all very well for someone who knows to say that the NT firewall
    only uses the standard release version (which is equally true of the
    UNIX version), but how do we know what parts of NT the firewall kit
    replaces?

    You use the words "most likely will not affect". Isn't that what
    engineering is for; to test SPs and tell us definitively that they do
    or do not affect the firewall? If an SP "most likely" won't break
    anything, how are we going to know if it does or doesn't?
