1788.0. "poor group-tunnel documentation" by IJSAPL::VANHULST () Tue Feb 11 1997 08:13

We recently did an implementation with two group-tunnels.

    just be aware:

There is NO documentation how to do it ........
You should fully understand how IP-routing works
Management and design of group-tunnels and routers must be integrated ....
If you find out the hard way ..... it makes sense

We may supply some more background information later, but push first AV
engineering to deliver proper documentation ... before touching this
    software .....

    Henk.

PS: With the move of Tunnel forum to the outside let's use SEAL to
report Tunnel-notes instead of creating another notes-file.

My philosophy is like Heath Kit, give the documentation and software to
the VP, Secretaries, Engineers, etc. and have them install it. If only
the Engineer can install the product then the documentation is flawed.
I've had to install this product a number of times and I STILL have
problems. I actually have three different manuals cuz the information
is all in pieces. I'm trying to get in the review process for the
documentation the next time around and hopefully it will be more
    user-friendly.

PLEASE provide feedback so we know what to improve.

    	Regards,

We (the Digital-UNIX Ambassadors) have suggested to the UNIX PM&Ds
that every product manager must at least install and configure their
own product once in order to know how/if it works ... 8*))

As .0 said if you don't know about IP routing you're most likely
running into problems sooner or later.
The AV Tunnel manuals should contain much more detailed examples
on how to configure tunneling using various setups like :

		- Tunnel server internal using hidden subnets (like
		  10.)
		- Tunnel server internal using assigned addresses
		- Tunenl server and firwall on the same box
		- Tunnel server and dialup connections
		- Tunnel server and RAS connections
		etc...
Also troubleshooting should be an integral part of the manuals
(I received the error "TunInit = ec2" once and this translated to
	an itnd already running ...).

1788.3AV Product Support ForumsGALVIA::SMITHWed Feb 12 1997 05:3510
As Digital NSIS is a valued AltaVista Partner, you have the right to
product support and you should utilise the Tunnel Forum to the fullest
extent possible. This is how AV intend to provide product support to
its partners, and I recommend that you use it to its fullest, and
complain bitterly (to AV) if you believe that you are not getting the
    support you require from AV.

On the other hand, if you wish to exchange Tunnel tips and methods with
your colleagues then here is as good a place as any - go right ahead.
Tunnels and firewalls logically go together.
