Hope this actually answers what was asked.
There are two types of password supported by the AltaVista firewall
1.. one-time passwords
2.. reusable passwords
A reusable password is a standard password that can be used time and
time again, until it is changed or it expires.
A one-time password is a password that is generated every time a user
wishes to authenticate.
The following methods of authentication provide one-time, or single-use
passwords, and are supported by the firewall software:
- Digital Pathways SecureNet Key (SNK)
- Security Dynamics SecurID cards
- Rascal Watch Word Keys
- Bell Communications Research S/Key software
- Once-off password
Each time a user authenticates, they present the firewall with their
userid, they are then prompted with a challege. This challenge is typed
into their previously programmed HHA and a one-time password (response)
is generated. The user can then authenticate using this password.
A once-off password is similar to a reusable password except that it
can only be used once. The whole idea behind allowing the use of once-off
passwords is to allow the firewall administrator to create a once-off
password for a user who is having problems with his/her Hand Held
Authenticator (lost it or whatever).
The user contacts the administrator who configures a once-off password
for the user allowing the user to authenticate.
In fact a once-off password is a type of one-time password.
