| For those who have had some experience with the Windows NT version, is 32MB of
memory enough for about 50 users?
Does running on Windows NT Server or workstation make a difference? Will v3 of
the firewall prefer one or the other?

| I am pretty much at the point that 64MB is the absolute minimum for NT or Unix
firewalls. The incremental cost is small compared to the performance nightmare
that can result. Also keep in mind the Purveyor Web Proxy is a dog from a
performance aspect, so give it plenty of memory...
As for server vs. ws for 50 users should not make a difference. The pain in the
ass with servers is you will have to get the right "foobar" driver from the
graphics card to whatever else is not on the supported NT distribution...
After you install the NT firewall, be prepared for 'incoming', it is not pretty.

Can you explain this, please?

| Do you also always spec 64M of memoery for AFWBSDI? The last
write-up I saw said 32M, but I'm inclined to specify 64M.
Set On /Hobby-horse: I don't believe the number of users of
the firewall is a helpful input into the sizing of the machine.
I always size on the basis of the Internet bandwidth. After
all, one user who sets Netscape to permit 20 concurrent network
connections, and then sucks 20 large files over ftp at the
same time is equivalent to (more than?) 20 normal users as
far as the firewall is concerned - he will be using 20 instances
of the www proxy. However, the bandwidth is always a hard
limit on what can be transferred.
So my rule-of-thumb for UNIX: 64M memory for up to and including
128K lines; 96M for up to and including 512K (maybe 1M); 128M or
more above that. For want of better information I'd use the same
rule for NT.

| In my experience, the AVNT firewall is so limited in functionality, the
customer usually is not real happy with it once they get to use it...
Good Luck,
Brad.
