| Yes a guide is worth the money... The first day to learn the lake and/or to
get techniques that work on that lake that you may not know about...
I don't think I'd want one for more than one day though. That would be a waste
of beer money...

| I've had good luck using guides down south on the first day of fishing
trips. I've used guides on Okeechobee, Santee-Cooper and Lanier.
Have done well on other spots w/o a guide. Wish we had used a guide on
the St Johns (Fla), lots of tidal water.
Santee was so good that we've been going back there and fishing the
same patterns for 7-8 years. Last year a couple of guys in our group
got a guide down at Santee, but from the sounds of it they asked the
guy to show them spots and he did just that, spent most of the time
zipping around the lake rather than showing them how to catch fish.
Didn't appear to be very productive to me.
While I've been going to Santee for many years, I'm thinking of getting
a guide again this year to help me with the stripers and worldclass
catfish.
I've never used one in the northeast. But if you go south and have
never fished down south I would definitely suggest a guide, the water
is very different.
If you want one in the northeast try 1-800-GOLEGEND

| Nope Brian, not for you and your brothers. Think of all that money you
can use to buy more BPS stuff on sale. Guides are in the same
catagory is wasting money on Fishing Seminars. We all know where you
stand on that subject 8^) !!!! Save your money and buy another All Star
Rod. Better yet dial 1-800-LEGEND and get hooked up with them Winnie
Smallies.

| Hey Mad Matt
Guides is not the same as seminars.. Seminars you get a dozen pro's
oushing their sponsors tackle and giving conflicting opinions like
every bassmaster mag. Take a good look in any one issue and one guide
swears soft plastic in cold water another stickbaits an third jigging.
Each pro has their own likes and sticks with it.
I have used a guide on Winnie, and let me tell you that bearded
hugeness knew his stuff, but threatened me if I ever disclosed who he
was that I would be found wrapped in chains on one of those rocky
outcrops he so likes. He threatened me as he washed his truck, then
swept out his boat, then dusted his dashboard. He did alright.
But I suspect that paying a guide might be worth the money on a big
lake that would take my brothers and I in our little 10hP all day to
cover.
Yes the lakes are in Maine.

| But of course Mr Madd Matt
I believe as Al Linders says....10 % of a body of water holds 90% of
the fish. Thats why guides are different than seminars. I truly
beleive that on any given body of water only a few places will
consistently produce bass. I know on one particular lake I fished that
same body of water a kajillion times and then one day I found a spot.
It was a small hump just below the surface in the middle of nowhere.
Just looking in that bay you would never have found it, I did strictly
by accident and every time I fish it, there are three of four good
sized bass there. Thats why I was considering hiring a guide for a big
lake, when you only have a 10 hp motor you can fish all day and never
find one of those spots. If guides really lead you to them, then that
much time is saved.
I'll stick to it, seminars on the other hand are like a room full of
these Mid Week Haulers. You get them in one room and each and every
one of them experts has a different technique and sure fire bait to
land them bigguns and you can't convince any of them yours is better.
Nuff said!

| A lot of guys will hire a plane for a couple of hours. That and
a good camera, you'll have all the humps located yourself.
Could be cheaper than a guide, also. I know thats what I'm
going to do when I finally qualify for the Classic :*)

But Brian, a lot of those MHHs put a lot of fish in the boat !!!!!
I'm sure a guide can at least put you on to a good spot and or
technique that will produce. But as Gaffer aluded to, know what to
look for and using your experience works wonders. An excellent Topo
map can help as well.

| < A lot of guys will hire a plane for a couple of hours. That and

Works great on clear lakes like you guys have up north, but many of the
lakes in the south are the color of hot chocolate; in Calif much of the fishing
is done at 40' or better. The sky-view technique is not very effective there.
If your goal is to catch fish, as opposed to just enjoying a great day on the
water, then a guide for the first day is not a bad investment.
